Opened in 2000, this is one of Tokushima’s best known tourist attractions. Glass-floored sections have been installed at four locations along the Promenade, so that visitors can view the strong tides　and roaring whirlpools in the sea below. The observation gallery at the far end of the Promenade makes use of the space provided by one of the Bridge girders to enable visitors to walk right round and get a 360-degree view; visitors can experience the impressive whirlpools from a spot 45 meters above the water.

It is said that in 815, a female deity gifted the mountains to Kukai, where he proceeded to sculpt stone and wooden statues of Acala. The wooden statue is enshrined in the main hall as the principal image. The temple grounds were designated a national Places of Scenic Beauty, and the Kobo Daishi hall that was rebuilt in 1920 is a National Important Cultural Property.     (Provided by service)Designated as an Important Tangible Folk Cultural Property of the country, the 45 meter long and two meter wide suspension bridge crosses the clear running waters of the Iya River at a height of 14 meters above the water’s surface. The bridge is made of hardy kiwi vines that grow wild in the cold mountains and are replaced once every three years. Various views exist as to why the bridge was originally built, one of which says that it was constructed by fugitives of the Taira clan who, in order to prevent attackers getting close, built it out of vines so they could quickly cut it down. Another probable story says that it was made by the saint, Kobo Daishi, who used to roam the valleys of Iya, in order to help stricken villagers.
