While the heat of summer is slowly starting to dissipate, September is still warm in Japan and a great time to visit. This year, the country will ignite as the Rugby World Cup kicks off on September 20, together with the Tokyo Game Show and plenty of food festivals. In this article, we’ll introduce you to some of the events taking place in September and what to expect.

    This September in Japan is going to be one of the most exciting yet, with the Rugby World Cup coming to the country. The opening match will be held at Tokyo Stadium on Friday 20 September 2019 while the final is taking place at the International Stadium Yokohama on Saturday 2 November 2019.

    If you haven’t already purchased tickets to see your favorite team in action, then it might be difficult to do so. But you can still soak up all the action from a live sports bar or at one of the free “Fan Zones” that will be set up in each of the 12 host cities.

    Fusing art, design and entertainment, this unique aquarium exhibition has been held all over Japan and always attracts a lot of visitors. It draws on the popular goldfish motif and combines it with impressive lighting in a way that’s distinctly Japanese. Its final event at Nihonbashi Mitsui Hall will take place from July to September, with three works from the giant fishbowl series - “Oiran”, “Ooku” and “Super Oiran” being featured. In addition, a majestic “Lotusrium” encompassing around four square meters will be exhibited, alongside the largest display of goldfish to be seen during the event.

    Created by Fujiko F. Fujio, “Doraemon” is one of the most beloved Japanese animations and will be heading to Osaka for a special exhibition featuring 28 of the country’s leading artists.

    The event will be held at the Osaka Cultural Center at Tempozan, with original Doraemon-themed artworks centered around this year’s theme “Create your own original Doraemon”. Artists and groups being featured include Takashi Murakami, Masuda Sebastian, Mika Ninagawa, and Yasumasa Morimura+Junko Koike. Each will bring the characters of Doraemon and Nobita to life, making it a must-see for fans of the TV series.

    Showcasing around 200 pieces of memorabilia related to “Star Wars”, this exciting exhibition will be taking place at Tokyo’s Terada Warehouse before the exhibitions make their permanent home in Los Angeles’ Lucas Museum of Narrative Art.

    You can expect to see original costumes worn by the actors and props used in the films, as well as concept artworks created to determine character settings. Another highlight of the exhibition is the “Identity Quest”. Visitors can touch their ID bracelet at various interactive stations while answering questions about their personality and values to determine their unique “Star Wars” character.

    Taking place on the rooftop garden of Ginza Six, this innovative sound installation brings together music, art, fashion and technology for a one-of-a-kind display. It’s being produced by “NF”, which is founded by Sakanaction’s Ichiro Yamaguchi and will feature an “orchestra without composers” where guests become the main players against the night skyline of Ginza. Visitors are invited to interact with the “instruments” to create various timbres and lights, with a special performance scheduled every 30 minutes.
