A Shinto shrine which records state was established in the land where Emperor Jinmu was born during the reign of Japan's fifth emperor, Emperor Kosho. According to one theory, it is the oldest shrine in the old castle town area. The shrine is primarily dedicated to Emperor Jinmu and derives its name from his childhood name (Sano-no-Mikoto). The approach to the shrine, lined with beautiful cedar trees, is said to be the longest perfectly straight shrine road in the country. The shrine was later relocated to its current location, and it is believed that the Ojibaru Shrine subordinate shrine, which is located around a kilometer west and enshrines a stone said to grant worshippers safe childbirth, is located where Sano Shrine originally stood.
