"Located approximately a 30-minute drive from the Hita Interchange of the Oita Expressway, this nationally-designed natural monument has innumerable large and small pits (round holes created by river erosion) created by rough natural streams over a long period of time upstream on the Yamakuni River. It is said that it was named ""Sarutobi"" (monkey jumping) because long ago mountain monkeys would jump around from rock to rock. Downstream are the scenic spots ""Mabayashikyo"" and ""Nenbutsu Bridge"", and you can enjoy the beauty of each season including cherry blossoms in the spring, fresh greenery in early summer, and colorful leaves in the autumn."

"In this valley, water flows over a single slab of large rock made of Yaba ravine lava. The stream is shallow, with a depth of 10 to 20 centimeters, so it is popular for stream walking around the clean stream. Also, if you walk along the path, you can enjoy a nice view in all four seasons, with new greenery or fall leaves, so people visit year-round. The water you can freely pump up at the drinking fountain near the administration building is famous water selected as one of the ""Top 15 Famous Water in Toyonokuni""."

Oita Areas

A trip to Oita is tantamount to a long soak in the Beppu baths. The mountainous, coastal prefecture of Oita is renowned for having more onsen than any other prefecture in Japan, most of which lie in the city of Beppu on the west coast of Kyushu, recognizable by its pungent sulphuric aroma and the clouds of steam that puff up across the hillside. Away from the Beppu hot springs await mountains, waterfalls, and temples, so don’t hesitate to explore Oita a little further.
