    This well established ‘fried cake’, or donut, shop on Nakadori Street, Kure City, Hiroshima Prefecture was founded in 1947. The donuts, fashioned after those made by previous generations of cake makers who learned the trade from an American baker and gained experience in famous cake shops and in Shanghai both before and during the war, are a simple deep fried bun loved for years by the locals. The sweet red bean paste inside light, fluffy dough, with a crispy outer finish tastes just great. The shop only serves donuts to go.

    This is a shop attached to Kirei Sake brewery located in Saijohonmachi, Higashihiroshima City. The brewery sells original products such as Kirei sake, bean confectionery using sake lees called “Touji-san” and “Suppin Kirei Soap” that containing sake lees.

To enjoy every coffee Subaru has to offer, the 1959 Shop is your best bet. You can partake of the “Navy man’s coffee” which was beloved by sea soldiers in the past. The second floor features a house studio which can be used for exhibitions, etc. Approximately 12 minutes from JR Kure Station.

    Since its founding in 1925, the Tobikiri Honpo—a direct subsidiary of Nakamoto Honten—has focused on creating “extremely excellent products” and offers an array of them for sale. There are a rich variety of products, from pickled goods, carbonated beverages, and tsukudani to Kure and Hiroshima specialties. The barrel-fresh pickled assortment and assorted “one-bite packs” are popular as souvenirs for home use. Approximately 10 minutes on foot from JR Kure Station.

    Founded in 1912, Okashi-no-kura Sakuraya is famous for its “tarumonaka.” Two varieties—white bean paste monaka that contains Saijo sake and lees from daiginjoshu and ginjoshu, and the Hokkaido dainagon red bean paste monaka—are delicious options for children and for people who do not like nihonshu. In addition, a variety of sweets are available—perfect for a souvenir. A three-minute walk from JR Saijo Station.

There is more than meets the eye awaiting any Hiroshima-bound traveler. Kicking off in Hiroshima city, the Peace Memorial Park, Hiroshima Castle, and Shukkeien Garden offer a couple of days of exploring; however, the real beauty lies along the southern coast of the prefecture. There, a series of islands spreads across the Seto Inland Sea: from the mysterious sea-submerged Great Torii Gate at Miyajima Island to the first half of the islands that connect Honshu to Shikoku via six spectacular suspension bridges.
