    This agritourism farm is located along Prefectural Route 270 in Nishigori, Soja City. Besides having the prefecture’s largest strawberry picking field, you can experience blueberry picking, potato digging, interacting with animals, barbecues, and making pizza in stone kilns. In addition, there are gourmet facilities such as a cake workshop using fruits from the farm and a buffet restaurant, and a direct sales store for agricultural products.

    We drove out on a day trip from Kurashiki and arrived after around 45 minutes. The carpark was packed but staff were on hand to guide vehicles into the appropriate lots. The lotus root croquette at...

    Okayama Pref. Soujashi Shuku 418
    This is a specialty goods shop and restaurant located on Prefectural Route 270 in Shuku, Soja City. The shop sells local special products and fresh vegetables picked in the morning. There is also a gallery that displays and sells crafts. The restaurant serves set meals with a choice of Kibiji okowa glutinous rice with special black soybean or red bean rice, udon noodles, soba and curry. In addition, there is also a cafe menu offering dishes such as Kofunzenzai red bean soup (reservation required) using special tofu.

    吉備路もてなしの館は、備中国分寺の駐車場の横、県道270ご線沿いにある施設です。施設内にはレストランとおみやげ屋さんが併設されていました。軽食コーナーのような場所もあり、私たちはここでソフトクリームをいただきました。備中国分寺とこうもり塚古墳を回ってきた後だったので、休憩スポットとしてうれしい立地ですね。

    This facility located in Kuroo, Soja City is for the protection of cultural properties and natural learning. Situated 400 meters from the summit of Mt. Kinojo, designated as a national Historic Site, it consists of the “Furusato to Shizen no Michi Walking Center” with a rest area and lecture rooms as a base of natural observation, and an exhibition building that displays materials related to Kinojo Castle, an old castle on Mt. Kinojo.

    This is a temple located in Kanbayashi, Soja City. It is one of the Kokubun-ji temples built nationally by the imperial command of Emperor Shomu in the Nara period. The present temple was rebuilt in the Edo period. The five-storied pagoda in the precincts is the only one in Okayama Prefecture and is designated as an Important Cultural Property. Its towering appearance is also called the symbol of Kibiji Road.

    This Zen temple of the Rinzai sect Tofukuji School is famous for being associated with the master painter Sesshu, and is located approximately a 15-minute drive from the Okayama Soja Interchange off of the Okayama Expressway. It commemorates an occasion in Sesshu's childhood when he is said to have depicted a mouse with his tears, thereby impressing the head priest. This Zen temple was one of the influential centers in spreading the religion into the Saikoku region. That which was an old thorn of the Tendai Sect, whose founder is Nichirin Daiajari, Donnan priest took and made it into a new temple in 1232 during the Kamakura era. Throughout the year regularly scheduled zazen meditation events are held but visitors, who wish, may also participate in Zen meditation sessions.

    Koumorizuka Burial Mound is a National Historic Site located in Kanbayashi in the city of Soja. This large keyhole-shaped mound, 100 meters long, is believed to be the tomb of a ruler in the ancient province of Kibi. At the rounded back end of the tomb is a burial chamber 19.4 meters long, made of huge stones and accessed by a passageway. It is the 4th largest such burial chamber in Japan, and archeologists have found large numbers of clay and metal artifacts in it.

    Sunagawa Park is located along the Sunagawa River in Kuro-o in the city of Soja. In addition to a bridge and walking trail, it has a tenting site, a multipurpose area, a waterslide that makes use of the river (although it may be impossible to use at times if there are problems with the water supply), and a popular spot for holding barbecues.

    Nearly 21km of bicycle and pedestrian only road that stretches from the Soja City Sports Center to Okayama City's Okayama Prefectural Multipurpose Grounds and have been chosen as one of Japan's 100 Best Roads. Along the route you'll come across sites including the Tsukuriyama (Sakusan as a local name) Ancient Burial Mound, Bicchu Kokubun-ji Temple, the Tsukuriyama (Zosan as a local name) Ancient Burial Mound, and Kibitsu Shrine. Feel the romantic vestige of history and you also enjoy the beautiful changing seasonal scenery. The smooth level road makes this an easy course for even cycling beginners. Rental bikes are available and can be dropped off at three different locations, in front of JR Soja Station, in front of Kokubun-ji Temple, and in front of JR Bizen-Ichinomiya Station.

    A 10-minute walk from JR Soja Station. This long-standing Japanese confectioner was founded in the first year of the Meiji period. Their well-known hallmark product, Sesshu Monaka (a wafer cake filled with red bean paste), draws its name from a tale about the painter Sesshu. Legend states that when he was a young monk in training, he drew a picture of a mouse using his tears. The shell is an adorable mouse shape made from local Okayama mochi-rice and the red bean paste interior is made from luxurious high-quality Hokkaido adzuki beans. The treat keeps well and is a popular souvenir. Also recommended is another of their leading products, their Tenchu cylindrical mochi bean-jam cake. It draws its appearance from the huge rocks of Mt. Tenchu which appeared in the poetry of poet Akiko Yosano.

    A two-minute walk from JR Soja Station. Located just in front of the station this long-standing bakery has been in business for over 80 years. Their bagged breads, wrapped in retro Showa period packaging, continue to be made with the same unchanging techniques since the shop opened and have the same classic flavor. Nearly 135 different varieties of bread can be enjoyed on a day by day basis, including new inventive ideas. Their most popular hallmark product is their Jo-An (commonly called Oil-Bread) which features a filling of their homemade smooth red bean paste and an enticing cinnamon aroma. Along with their bagged Butter Roll (Pillow Bread) and Matsukasa (Pinecone) breads their nostalgic School Lunch Fried Roll is another popular choice.

    This yakiniku grilled meat restaurant, located nearly 10-minutes down Prefectural Route 270 from the Okayama-Soja Interchange on the Okayama Expressway, uses solely carefully selected ingredients. They're known for their filling thick cuts of meat that really let you taste the true flavor of the meat and this reputation has garnered them many repeat local customers. They offer a simple, reasonably priced menu with cuts including high-quality roast (sirloin), high quality kalbi (beef short ribs), salted tongue, beef chuck, and chicken neck. We especially recommend the firm Thick Cut Salted Tongue and their Salted Kalbi seasoned with a salt sauce.
  • Bicchu Kokubunji Temple

    A 10-minute drive from the Okayama-Soja Interchange on the Okayama Expressway. The remains of one of the Kokubun Niji nunnery temples built under the orders of Emperor Shomu to provide spiritual protection for the country. It's believed to have been built during the mid-8th century, the same period as Kokubun-ji Temple located nearly 700 meters to the west, but is assumed to have been abandoned shortly thereafter. The temple area covers a rectangular plot nearly 108-meters east to west and 216 meters north to south. The southern gate, middle gate, main temple, and lecture hall are arranged following a straight line. Presently foundation stones and pillar supports for buildings such as the main temple remain in the red-pine forest and traces of other building including the southern gate, middle gate, lecture hall, and tower have been discovered.

    A five-minute walk from JR Higashi-Soja Station. This, the former Soja Police Station built in 1910, is the only remaining Meiji period western style building within Soja City. It retains the feel of those past days and stands out for its octagonal multi-story entrance. In 2006 it was chosen as a Tangible Cultural Property of Japan. Inside you'll find displays with materials related to traditional industry during the Meiji period including Bicchu's pharmaceuticals and Aso's metal casting and woven rush work with an emphasis on pharmaceuticals. Part of the building is available as an exhibition space.
  • Bicchu Soja Shrine

    A five-minute walk from JR Higashi-Soja Station. Located in the central part of Soja City this shrine is the origin of the name for both the city and the station. It's establishment is unknown but it's said that during the late Heian period to curtail pilgrimage times requirements 324 shrines were established together throughout the Bicchu region and that they then began performing religious rites together. Alongside the principle deity of the shrine, Onamochi-no-Mikoto (another name of Okuninushi-no-Mikoto), his wife Suseribime-no-Mikoto and 324 other gods are enshrined in the shrine. The shrine garden follows and ancient pattern and is said to have been used as a reference when Korakuen garden was built during the Edo period.
