    Shiga Pref. Nagahamashi Kohokuchouimanishi
This wild bird observation space is on the Imanishi Sazanami Higyway in Kohoku-cho, Nagahama City. It's in the heart of Kohoku Waterfowl Park, in that same town along the shores of Lake Biwa. In addition to being able to see native and migratory birds who pass through year-round through the telescopes, they also have displays of fish and amphibians living in Lake Biwa to see. It's also connected to the Lake Biwa Waterfowl and Wetland Center and Roadside Station Kohoku Mizudori Station facilities.
  • Samegai Water-Crowfoot
    Travel / Tourism
    Shiga Pref. Maibarashi Samegai
A colony of aquatic plants growing in the Jizo River in Samegai, Maibara City. There are only a few locations in Japan with the conditions needed by water-crowfoot to grow; the Jizo River, selected by the Ministry of the Environment as one of the 100 most famous rivers in Japan in the Heisei period, is one such, flowing with the clear waters of springs such as the Isame and boasting the perfect temperature for the plants. The plants bloom with tiny, plum tree-like blossoms from mid-May to late August.
  • Amano River Fireflies
    Travel / Tourism
    Shiga Maibara-shi Nagaoka Surrounding area
"A 10-minute walk from JR Omi-Nagaoka Station. ""Nagaoka's Genji fireflies and the area where they breed"" is the only firefly-related National Special Natural Monument in the country. A Firefly Festival is held here each year around early June, and during that time firefly-themed paper lanterns are placed along walking paths in the event area; visitors walking near the pure river will see a magical world created by the lights of countless Genji fireflies. The fireflies engage in three flying sessions a night and are most active from around 8 p.m. to 9 p.m."

    Shiga Pref. Maibarashi Samegai

    例え咲く季節であっても気象条件によって、前日とかに大雨が降ったり増水したりすると梅花藻は現れてくれません。本来の見頃は毎年7月下旬から8月下旬頃らしい。

Shiga Areas

around-area-map

Visitors to Shiga prefecture are almost always hopping east across the prefectural border from Kyoto, and they are almost certainly Lake Biwa-bound. Covering an area of 670 square kilometers, Lake Biwa makes up the bulk of Shiga prefecture, with beautiful lakeside paths that offer myriad walking and cycling opportunities, connecting a string of museums, shrines, and picturesque views that finally lead you to Hikone Castle on the eastern side of the lake.
