    Mie Pref. Shimashi Isobechouerihara
A cave where according to legend the sun goddess Amaterasu Omikami hid herself. Surrounded by trees, it is also a naturally beautiful location. The water welling forth from six holes in Erihara has been selected as one of the 100 most renowned spring waters in Japan. Many ascetic practitioners come to train in the waters of the nearby Misogi Falls.
  • Koushirahama Beach
    Travel / Tourism
    Mie Pref. Shimashi Agochoukou
This beach in Shima City, Mie Prefecture is marked by its wide, shallow shoal and gentle curve. The south side has the Ago Matsubara Beach, which is packed with swimmers all summer long. The beach is also a year-round surfing spot, and famous even in the surfing hot spots of the Chugoku region. They even hold surfing competitions here.
  • Oumu Seki Rock
    Travel / Tourism
    Mie Pref. Shimashi Isobechouerihara
Located in Isobe Town, Shima City, Mie Prefecture, this is a large slab of rock with a width of 127 meters and a height of 31 meters towering halfway up Mt. Wago. A voice emitted at the speaking place reaches to a separate listening place that is approximately 50 meters away. It was called Oumu Iwa (or Parrot Rock) because it almost seems like the rock is mimicking people’s words. The observatory at the top is a favorable view spot that looks out over the rural land, people’s homes, and the Pacific Ocean off in the distance. In addition to tourists, is a relaxing place also used by locals who come for picnics and excursions.
  • Ichigo Beach
    Travel / Tourism
    Mie Pref. Shimashi Agochoushijima
This beach is accessible by taking the Shima Nokyo-mae bound bus service from UgataStation on the Kintetsu Shima Line. It is located at the end of the 20-minute bus ride and a further five-minute walk from the final bus stop. Spider Lily blooms along this beautiful white sand beach, and on a clear day, the blue sky continues all the way to the far horizon. It is very popular for surfing, but the scenery can also be enjoyed on a drive along the edge of the beach. Although there are parking lots, toilets and sidewalks available, the beach is not a designated place for swimming, so visitors must be aware of their own responsibility in that regard.
  • Azuri Beach
    Travel / Tourism
    Mie Pref. Shimashi Shimachoukoshika
This coast extends for approximately 200 meters along the Shima Peninsula. It is a wide, shallow beach with gentle waves and is very popular for swimming in the summer. Because it is west-facing, in the evenings, especially in the summer, the whole coast is painted red with the sunset, making it an extremely scenic spot. It is also famous as a filming location, where movies such as Yellow Elephant were filmed. In the middle of the beach, there is a small island called Suzume Island, which also gives the beach the name Monster Beach, because at certain times of the day, the island appears as the head of a monster that bites into the sinking sun.
  • Mt. Hiyori
    Travel / Tourism
    Mie Shima-shi Isobecho Matoya
This mountain is located in Matoya, Isobe-cho, Shima City. Offering a sweeping view of Matoya Bay, when the area was a flourishing port where ships waited for favorable winds, sailors would climb this mountain to check the weather out to sea. A replica compass stone standing on the mountain (the original is in the collection of the Shima City Museum of History and Folklore) hints at this past.

Mie Areas

around-area-map

Spread across the eastern side of the Kii Peninsula, Mie prefecture boasts hundreds of kilometers of pretty coastline comprising the oyster-rich Toba city and Shima National Park all the way down to Kumano, a city that marks the beginning of part of the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage, which runs into neighboring Wakayama prefecture. However, Mie is best known for the Ise Jingu Shinto shrine inland, one of the oldest and largest shrines in the country.
