  • Shirahama Shrine

    This is Izu’s oldest shrine located in Shimoda City, Shizuoka Prefecture. As the temple grounds sit on a hillside on the Shirahama coast “Hidachiyama” (Mt. Hitachi), it is called Shirahama Shrine but its official issued name is Ikonahime no Mikoto Shrine. The god of matchmaking, Ikonahime no Mikoto is enshrined in the main shrine. The Chinese parasol tree forest is one of Japan’s Natural Treasure, while the 2000-year-old juniper tree forest has been designated by Shizuoka Prefecture as a Natural Treasure.
  • Kawazu Hachiman Shrine

    This shrine is located about a six-minute walk from Kawazu Station on the Izu Kyuko Line. It enshrines the Soga Brothers, Juro Sukenari and Goro Tokimune and their father Kawazu Saburo Sukeyasu. The brothers' attempt to avenge their father's death was famously immortalized in the epic tale Soga Monogatari, known as one of the 'Three Biggest Acts of Revenge in Japan. It is also said that the mansion of the Kawazu Clan was located here near the end of the Heian period. Saburo, who is said to have had possessed immense strength, is credited with the creation of the kawazu-gake, one of the 48 basic techniques of sumo wrestling. The shrine features the chikaraishi (lifting stone) Saburo is said to have used in training as well as a statue of him holding the massive stone.
  • Kawazu Kinomiya Shrine

    This ancient shrine listed in the Engishiki, a document from the Heian period, is located about a 12- minute walk from Kawazu Station on the Izu Kyuko Line. Its official name is Sugihokowake no Mikoto Shrine. The large camphor tree next to the main shrine building is called the Kinomiya-sama no Okusu and is a National Natural Monument. The 24-meter-tall tree measures 20 meters in circumference at the roots and is said to be over 1,000 years old. The shrine's parishioners observe practices called tori-shojin and sake-shojin in which they refrain from consuming chicken, eggs and alcohol respectively from the 18th to 23rd of December.

    This old shrine notable for its bright red Ryobu-style shrine gate is located about 120 minutes from Numazu Interchange on the Tomei Expressway via National Route 136. It enshrines the Shinto mountain deity Hikohohodemi no Mikoto, Sumiyoshi Mihashira no Okami, the Shinto gods of the sea, and Ryukoku Suijin, the Shinto god of the water. The Matsufuji Sokakukyo mirror possessed by the shrine, a National Important Cultural Property, was donated to the shrine by the shogun Minamoto no Yoritomo. The temple grounds feature points of interest such as the 1,000-year-old Great Camphor Tree of Inashimo Shrine as well as a Shinmeisui spring, which is considered to be a fountain of long life.
  • Dontsuku Shrine

    This shrine is located about a 20-minute walk from Izu-Inatori Station. The ancient shrine, which has a history dating back some 2,000 years, is situated on an elevated spot of Cape Inatori, a short distance from Inatori Ryugu Misaki Park and the Inatori Cape Lighthouse. The shrine is best known for the Dontsuku Festival held in June each year. During the extremely famous and unusual festival, a portable shrines bearing a shintai (object of worshop) representing male fertility is carried around the town by teams of women including both locals and tourists. The purpose of this ritual is to pray for matrimonial harmony and the perpetuation of descendants. The festival includes attractions such as fireworks displays and vendor stalls. The go-shintai is on permanent display at the shrine outside of the festival season.
