This popular cherry blossom viewing spot north of Funaoka Castle Park is about three minutes on foot from both Ogawara Station and Funaoka Station. It's one of the Tohoku region's premier places to take in the springtime scenery, and 300,000 tourists from around the nation descend on the park every year between early and mid-April when the roughly 1,200 Yoshino cherry trees along the Shiraishi River are at their spectacular peak. The Ogawara Cherry Blossom Festival coincides with the season, featuring boat trips to view the blossoms from late morning until evening, and the illuminated trees at night. The still snow-capped peaks of the Zao Mountains make a great backdrop to the trees in bloom.

Lying along the northeastern coast of Japan, Miyagi prefecture is home to lashings of natural parks, oysters, and hot springs. While the bustling city of Sendai offers some simple city entertainment, it’s the Matsushima islands that deserve the most attention, having boosted the prefecture’s reputation as one of Japan’s most scenic views.
