  • Rishiri Island
    Travel / Tourism
    Rishiri Rishiri-gun, Hokkaido
"Rishiri Island is a roughly circular island situated off the northwest coast of Hokkaido; the ferry journey from the port of Wakkanai to Oshidomari Port, the gateway to Rishiri, takes around one hour and 40 minutes. Rishiri has an abundance of magnificent scenery, including Mt. Rishiri, which stands tall in the middle of the Island. Also known as ""Rishiri Fuji"" because of its resemblance to Mt. Fuji, Mt. Rishiri is a treasure-house of alpine plants; visitors can enjoy the fields of flowers near the summit, and the spectacular 360-degree panoramic views from the summit itself. When the weather is clear, Mt. Rishiri can be seen reflected upside-down in the golden-blue water of Himenuma Pond, which is located in the foothills of the mountain, surrounded by primary forest. At Senboshimisaki Park on the coast, with its unusually shaped rock formations, visitors can also see wild seals."

The cape of the northernmost tip of Rebun Island is a cliff that juts out into the sea. The ocean is clear blue, and off the tip of the cape is an uninhabited island “Todo Island”, where you can see seals as the name suggests (Todo in Japanese means seal). If the weather is fine, you may be able to see Sakhalin in Russia in the distance.

    Hokkaido Rishirigunrishirifujichou Oshidomari
"Mt. Rishiri is a 1,721 meter-high mountain on Rishiri Island, which is situated in the Sea of Japan off the northwest coast of Hokkaido, a 1 hour and 40 minute ferry journey from Wakkanai. The mountain's conical shape and wide base, which resemble Mt. Fuji, have led to it becoming known as ""Rishiri-Fuji."" It heads the list of the ""100 Famous Japanese Mountains"". From the summit, climbers can enjoy unobstructed 360-degree panoramic views. Mt. Rishiri is also a treasure-house of alpine plants; in the summer months, visitors can see the Papaver fauriei Fedde, which is endemic to Rishiri Island, in bloom. The grove of Chishima Cherry trees on the mountain's southern slopes have been designated as a Prefectural Natural Monument in Hokkaido."
  • Jizo-iwa Rock
    Travel / Tourism
    Rebun-cho, Rebun-gun, Hokkaido
On the Motochi Coast in the south west of Rebun Island is this strange looking 50 meter high rock. As seen from the sea side, the name Jizo rock was given because it looks as though Jizo-sama (bodhisattva who looks over children) is holding hands. The area is famous for the beautiful image of the sun setting over the ocean, and the local coastal area is also a great place for children to go looking for agate stone.

Hokkaido Areas

around-area-map

Not just a prefecture but an island of its own, Hokkaido is the most northerly prefecture and island of the Japanese archipelago. Arriving in Hokkaido, which is rural and bursting with breathtaking nature, means entering a world where vast national parks, towering mountains, and natural hot springs can be found at every turn. Come December, these natural splendors freeze over and morph into a winter wonderland.
