Hakone Kyukaido
"A road through Hakone that during the Edo period was extremely difficult to pass. It was commonly called ""Hakone Hachiri."" With its many steep slopes, it was developed as an official road through the mountains by the shogunate in the early Edo period. Travelers often had to walk through mud up to the shins, so more current stone paving was installed. The stone paving that remains today has been designated a national Historic Site."
