Chanko stew Tomoe Kata Ryogoku
Chanko-nabe is a general term for a meal served in sumo stables to wrestlers, and is said to have originated in the Dewanoumi stable of the 19th yokozuna, Chirikuzan, during the Meiji era (1868-1912). There are various theories as to the origin of the term. It contains nutritious ingredients such as fish, meat, and vegetables, and can be prepared in large quantities. There are many famous chanko restaurants in the Ryogoku area. Among them, Chanko Tomoegata, which has a history of about 45 years, was opened in 1976 (Showa 51) by Tomoegata, a famous wrestler of the Showa period and former kobozuna, and is currently run by his second son's wife as proprietress.
