- Hikone Castle was able to circumvent a decree in the early Meiji era (1868-1912) that called for castles to be demolished. Today, it remains much as it always has, and is recognized as a valuable artifact. Be sure to climb the castle keep, which is designated as a national treasure. From there you can see the town of Hikone and, in the distance, Lake Biwa.
