When asked about famous Japanese foods most recall savory dishes such as sushi or ramen. However, Japan has a serious sweet tooth and has been cultivating desserts since the Edo period. Japanese desserts are more mild than their Western counterparts and focus on natural ingredients like fruits or creams rather than technicolor frosting. Each of these desserts represents some of the most popular sweets currently in style. From elaborate soft cream to carefully plated parfaits, there is a dessert for every palate and every age.

The mille feuille has thinly sliced Fuji apples layered with fresh vanilla cream between buttery, flaky pastry. The mille feuille is a French twist on the Japanese produce and can only be found in the Keiryu Hotel.

    Tsuwano, a small town in Shimane, is relatively unknown but is gaining popularity due to its quaint atmosphere. Their most popular dessert, genji maki, is a fusion of European and Japanese desserts, made from castella, or sponge cake, and filled with red bean paste. This dessert is only known in Tsuwano so be sure to pick it up while it is still fresh. The local bakeries make each genji maki one at a time and visitors can even try their own hand at rolling the azuki into the cake. Yamamoto Fuumido is one of the most popular shops because visitors can watch their genji maki handmade by the chefs.
