Gold Ice Cream in Kanazawa

Most well known for its gold production, Kanazawa is not just the stop to find gold jewelry but to also ingest the metal itself. The ice cream is made from creamy vanilla soft serve with a thin gold sheet wrapped around the ice cream. A popular place to try the decadent dessert is in the preserved Higashi chaya district. Stroll around in a yukata and survive Western Japan’s blistering summer with a shiny ice cream cone, only found in Kanazawa. Not to worry, the gold is edible!

Dango in Kyoto

Feeling more sweet and savory? Kyoto is known for dango, small glutinous rice balls roasted over a fire and drizzled with teriyaki sauce. They are served on a wooden stick, making it a good portable snack. The dango is best served piping hot from a stand found outside of most shrines and temples. Each dango is specially prepared by their owner and can vary in recipes. Be sure to try them all!

Fuji Apples in Aomori

Up at the tip of Northern Honshu is Aomori and its famous apple farms. Aomori produces about half of Japan’s apple production and visitors cannot leave without a taste of the local Fuji apples, which were originally crossbred there. One of the best apple desserts is at the Oirase Keiryu Hotel in the Oirase Gorge, a nature retreat a little outside Aomori city. The mille feuille has thinly sliced Fuji apples layered with fresh vanilla cream between buttery, flaky pastry. The mille feuille is a French twist on the Japanese produce and can only be found in the Keiryu Hotel.

Mt. Fuji Jelly in Yamanashi

The Fuefukigawa Fruit Park is a recreational arena where visitors can learn about the history of fruit in Yamanashi. The park is not only kid friendly and educational, it offers some of the best fruity desserts featuring the best of Yamanashi’s produce. Restaurant Gaia has a Fuji Fruit Jelly plate featuring the best of Yamanashi’s current seasonal offerings. The dessert changes in the seasons but consistently features jelly resembling the iconic shape of Mt. Fuji and its snow capped peak.

Peach Parfait in Yamanshi

Opening in 1878, Fujiya Hotel was the first resort hotel in Japan. To this day, Fujiya Hotel provides the best in accommodation and service alongside an elegant hotel serving fresh Yamanashi fruits and vegetables. The peach parfait is Fujiya Hotel’s specialty and has been drawing fruit lovers in with their succulent peaches and velvety cream. This decadent dessert represents the best in Yamanashi summer fruits and is the best way to cool down after a long day at the Fuefukigawa Fruit Park.

Genji Maki in Shimane

Tsuwano, a small town in Shimane, is relatively unknown but is gaining popularity due to its quaint atmosphere. Their most popular dessert, genji maki, is a fusion of European and Japanese desserts, made from castella, or sponge cake, and filled with red bean paste. This dessert is only known in Tsuwano so be sure to pick it up while it is still fresh. The local bakeries make each genji maki one at a time and visitors can even try their own hand at rolling the azuki into the cake. Yamamoto Fuumido is one of the most popular shops because visitors can watch their genji maki handmade by the chefs.
