    Start: 9:00 a.m. Jozenji-dori Ave.

    Jozenji-dori Ave

    Jozenji-dori Ave

Jozenji-dori Ave. is known for its lovely rows of Japanese zelkova trees lining the thoroughfare. The street has become a symbol of Sendai, and there’s a walkway set right between the two lanes of traffic that has plenty of shade from the zelkovas as well as the occasional sculpture.
At the end of the street you’ll come to the Talk Net Hall Sendai, where you can pick up a rental from a Date Bike Cycle Port.

    10:00 a.m. Zuihoden

    Zuihoden

    Zuihoden

Date Masamune was the founder of Sendai, and Zuihoden is a mausoleum dedicated to him and his descendants. But just because it’s a mausoleum doesn’t mean it’s drab. The architecture is painted in vibrant colors and features elaborate woodwork, offering an interesting juxtaposition to the serene natural setting. Be prepared to climb some stairs, though. The path to the main area is a long stone staircase that will keep the blood pumping.

12:00 p.m. Botanical Item and Cafe Cyan

    It's too beautiful curry.

    It's too beautiful curry.

It’s back to the city for lunch. Botanical Item and Cafe Cyan is causing a ruckus with its too beautiful curry. The vegetables and herbs in the curry add a healthy dose of color and the whole dish is then topped with edible flowers, not to mention the exotic nautilus-shaped dish it’s served in. As expected from a cafe serving a dish this pretty, the interior is a whimsical mixture of antiques, greenery, and European style. The aged woodwork and paint create an artistic space meant for you to relax and enjoy the complex flavors Botanical Item and Cafe Cyan has to offer.

    2:00 p.m. Sendai Castle Ruins

    Sendai Castle Ruins

    Sendai Castle Ruins

Sendai Castle, also known as Aoba Castle, was built by Date Masamune over 400 years ago. Date Masamune wanted to display that he wasn't being hostile towards Tokugawa Ieyasu, so he refrained from adding any towers to the Sendai castle.
The impressive outer stone walls still remain, though, and it was built on the high ground of Mount Aoba. There’s also a canyon behind the castle, giving it solid natural fortifications.
At the Honmaru Honkan you can see exhibits on the castle and Date Masamune, as well as a statue of Masamune himself. The city overlook from the Honmaru Honkan is a must-see.

4:00 p.m. The Miyagi Museum of Art

    The Miyagi Museum of Art

    The Miyagi Museum of Art

The Miyagi Museum of Art is one of the largest publicly operated art museums in Japan. In the collection you’ll find paintings, sculptures, and woodblock prints from artists that have some connection to the Tohoku region. There are also displays of foreign artwork from masters such as Wassily Kandinsky and Paul Klee to round out the diverse collection.
The structure itself is a prime example of architecture designed by Kunio Maekawa, featuring clean lines and a tiled exterior typical of the Showa era. Wander around the museum to see how the outlying gardens and structures blend effortlessly into the environment.

    Sendai Mediatheque

The glass exterior of Sendai Mediatheque pushes right up against Jozenji-dori Ave., allowing you to see inside its translucent structure to the latticework support beams arranged in an untraditional fashion. Defined as a public space for cultural events, the Sendai Mediatheque hosts galleries and workshops, as well as offers a cinema for a creative film. It’s a great stopover simply to see the building, and on the first floor there’s a cafe perfect a quick rest before heading to dinner.

    Date no Gyutan Honp

    Date no Gyutan Honp

The food specialty that first comes to mind when people think of Sendai is gyutan, or cow tongue. Before you turn your nose up at this delectable foodstuff, the cow tongue is thinly sliced and well seasoned. It’s a lean cut of red meat that’s still tender, and Date no Gyutan has it in a variety of dishes. In fact, this restaurant is so popular that they even opened a branch in Tokyo, so expect a quality meal.
The restaurant’s vibe is upscale, with dark decor complemented by bright wall inlays, and it all comes together for a chic dining experience distinctly Sendai. A perfect end to our cycling adventure.
