Colored Beer at Yakiniku Beer-kan
Colored Beer at Yakiniku Beer-kan
A 10-minute walk east along Abashiri River away from the station lies local favorite Yakiniku Beer-kan. The restaurant’s location right next door to the Abashiri Brewery is what keeps this spot bustling every night. Specialising in colored beers, the Abashiri Brewery supplies the restaurant with a selection of blue, green, red, and pink bottled brews. The blue Ryuhyo Draft, on the menu for just 400 yen the glass, is said to be brewed using a surprisingly unartificial mix of melted sea ice and natural colorings from the sea. The beer is matched perfectly with a good serving of yakiniku (grilled meat) which restaurant-goers grill up themselves on a hot plate in the center of the table.

Abashiri Champon
Abashiri Champon
While champon is a dish that originates from the other end of Japan down in Kyushu’s Nagasaki Prefecture, this wholesome noodle dish has made it onto menus around Abashiri becoming a favorite dish for warming your cockles during those long winter months. Thanks to the abundance of seafood in Hokkaido, Abashiri’s spin on a bowl of champon often includes an additional serving of scallops or clams. Though served at several restaurants around the city, one of the best spots is Abashiri Central Hotel’s in-house restaurant Grand Glacier whose friendly staff will welcome everyone in, whether a hotel guest or not.
