Free Walking Tours of Asakusa

Tokyo Systematized Goodwill Guide (SGG) Club has free walking tours in Asakusa, Ueno, and Yanaka.
Reservations aren’t needed; you just show up at the designated time and place to join the tour.
Guides will introduce the locations in English, and tours run on different days depending on the area.
There are normally 2 tours per day, so its better to check the webpage for specific days and times of the tour.
Asakusa tours run around Sensoji temple, Ueno tours run around Ueno Park, and Yanaka tours run around Yanaka Cemetery, with each tour lasting about 90 minutes.

Take a Water Bus Tour

Cruise down the Sumida River on a water bus from Asakusa Pier.
There are several routes to choose from, including a line running from Asakusa to Odaiba and Asakusa to Hamarikyu Gardens.

Prices range from about 1,000 to 2,000 yen, depending on the vessel, but seeing Tokyo rise out of the water as you drift lazily along is a worthwhile experience.
Rides take from 40 to 70 minutes, and you can even ride the sci-fi inspired Himiko boat to take advantage of its panoramic windows.

Hanayashiki, Japan’s Oldest Amusement Park

Hanayashiki (花やしき) is Japan’s oldest amusement park, built all the way back in 1853.
The retro vibe adds a unique twist to the atmosphere, and the park is sure to keep the whole family entertained.
They have attractions that allow riders as young as a few months, as well as thrill rides for adults.
August is the season of summer vacation, so the park closes at 8 p.m. instead of 6, with nighttime illuminations.

Ameshin, Making Candy Sculptures Shop

Amezaiku is the Japanese craft of making candy sculptures, and Ameshin Hanakawado Studio lets you try creating candy yourself at a workshop.
The workshop lasts about 2 hours, and you’ll learn how to make a candy rabbit that you can take home with you.

Roof Tile Breaking

Ever dreamed of smashing roof tiles like they do for martial arts performances?
At Kawara-wari Kawarana (瓦割りカワラナ), you can test your prowess in the Japanese tradition of breaking roof tiles with your hands.

Skytree Terrace Tour

Skytree visitors now have the option of taking an outdoor terrace tour of the tower.
The 50-minute tour will take you around the tower’s exterior, and you’ll wear a hardhat and safety vests to comply with Skytree’s strict safety standards.

Night time visitors can see nice viewing.

But the open-air view of Tokyo from 155 meters up is well worth it.

Night Cruise on the Sumida River

Yakatabune (屋形船) are Japanese leisure boats that have been used since the Edo period.
They run along the Sumida River both daytime and night, but the nighttime cruises are especially popular for their glittering city views.
Many use the yakatabune for groups and full boat rentals, but you can find shared cruises for parties as small as 2 people.

Tsurishin (釣新) is a yakatabune company that has nighttime courses where you’ll see Rainbow Bridge, Tokyo Tower, and Skytree.
Departure times are from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., and cruises last 2.5 hours, including dinner on the boat.
The dock is 5 minutes on foot from Kuramae Station, which is 2 minutes/1 stop from Asakusa Station. Reservations are made via email.
