Open in 2012, Tokyo Skytree is the world’s largest tower standing at 634 meters. The tower is located in Sumida and is known for its colorful evening lights. Skytree has become the most popular elevated sightseeing spot with panoramic views of the city and Mt. Fuji. Until recently, visitors could only purchase two different types of tickets to reach the top: the lower Tembo Deck at 350 meters and the higher Tembo Galleria at 450 meters. To add to the mix, a new tour has been added to the menu and those looking for a more refreshing and indepth visit to Skytree can try the new Sky Terrace Tour, an elevated outdoor tour of the tower’s exterior.

  • The Skytree Terrace Tour is a 50-minute outdoor tour along the only open-air observation deck available at the Skytree, located at 155 meters above ground. The observation deck which was originally accessible only to maintenance crews and employees is now opened to the public so visitors can now enjoy the breathtaking views of Tokyo without the restricting glass windows.

The tours are led by a knowledgeable guide who explains the construction and history of the tower. The guide walks the group around the observation deck and explains the intricate design of the modern structure. The tours are only led in Japanese, however, multilingual readers can be rented out at the front desk. Architecture enthusiasts or Japan history aficionados can get an up-close glimpse of Skytree’s inner workings.

To prepare, visitors must don colorful safety vests that attach to a plastic phone or camera case. Visitors have to keep their electronics inside the case to avoid accidental droppings. A safety helmet is also worn, and sneakers are provided for those wearing open-toed shoes. Jackets are available for those sensitive to cooler weather. All belongings, jewelry, bags and other accessories should be stowed in a locker. All of these safety precautions are for the sake of the bystanders below Skytree, rather than the visitors. Those on the Skytree deck are very safe and have nothing to worry about.

The tours are only on weekdays from 1 PM to 8 PM, with each tour lasting 50 minutes. The view is majestic both in the day and night. Visitors during the day can marvel at Mt. Fuji while night time visitors can see lit up skyscrapers and Skytree’s vibrant light show. The view is especially picturesque during the sunset.

Tickets cost 2,500 yen. Visitors can purchase tickets for the tour from the first or fourth-floor ticket counter. Those who already hold Skytree tickets can upgrade their pass for an additional 1,700 yen. Participants must be six years of age or older and groups are topped off at 25 people. Registration is necessary prior to joining the tour but tickets do not need to be reserved in advance. The Skytree Terrace Tour and Skytree Observation Deck tickets are different. They must be purchased separately. It is possible for tours to get suddenly canceled due to inclement or windy weather. The tour will be refunded and an alternative, indoor tour will be offered for an additional 1,000 yen.

  • The Skytree Terrace tours start from 1 PM. Tickets can be purchased within one hour prior to the start of every tour. If visitors already hold observation deck tickets, they are welcome to upgrade them. Those who’ve only purchased Terrace tour tickets must also purchase indoor observation deck and gallery tickets separately in order to move on to this areas after the outdoor tour.
