How to get to Tottori Sand Dunes from Tokyo/Osaka

Tottori Sand Dunes is the largest sand dune in Japan. Superb photo spots, riding camels and sandboarding is just a typical day here at the dunes.

From Tokyo you can either catch a plane that goes from Tokyo to Tottori, or you can take a bus that arrives at a station closest to Tottori's sand dunes. We'll also be including an access guide for how to get there from Osaka.

From Tokyo, you can access Tottori Sand Dunes by plane or Shinkansen. Here, we will introduce the easiest accessible plane route.

There are no Tottori flights from Narita Airport, so be sure to use Haneda Airport. From Haneda Airport head to Tottori Airport, then take a bus from the airport to the sand dunes.

    Time required: Approximately two hours
    Fares: Approximately 31,000 yen

Even though Tottori Airport and Tottori Sand Dunes are relatively close to each other, you'll need to take the bus to get there. We've added pictures on how to get to the sand dunes from Tottori Airport.

Take the bus from Tottori Airport and get off at the “Johoku Danchi” bus stop (城北団地バス停). Cross the road and proceed in the direction of the picture below. In the distance there is an “Apaman Shop” (アパマンショップ) which is the direction you'll be heading in.

Once you're at the bus stop “Johoku Danchi” (城北団地), you'll need to catch a bus that goes to "Sakyu Higashiguchi" (砂丘東口) bus stop.

WARNING!!! There are 5 different buses that go through this bus stop and only two of them will take you where you want to go.

If the bus says on its display screen "岩井行き" or "砂丘行き", it will stop at Sakyu Higashiguchi bus stop. If you are unsure which bus is the correct one, just ask the bus driver politely "Sakyu Higashiguchi??" and you should be fine.

    * On Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays, you can go from Tottori Airport to the dunes without any transfers. Click here for more info (click "English" once you're on the webpage).

There are only 3 flights a day so plan your bus trip accordingly.
