  • Beppu Onsen
    Oita Beppushi-shi
    One of the eight most well-known hot spring districts in Beppu City known as the Beppu Hatto. Takegawara Onsen, a hot spring bathhouse with a gorgeous Chinese-style gabled roof which serves a symbol of Beppu Onsen, is located here. The district is famous for its sand baths, which involve visitors lying down in sand wearing a yukata robe and being covered by sand heated by the site's natural hot spring waters. Noted in the Iyo no kuni fudoki, an ancient chronicle of the area, this history-leaden hot spring resort only truly entered the limelight starting in the Edo period. The Beppu Hatto Onsen Festival is held primarily in Beppu Onsen each year in April and its biggest attraction is a huge parade called Yu-Bukkake festival in which participants and onlookers are splashed with over 40 tons of local hot spring water.

  • Kannawa Onsen
    Oita Beppushi-shi
    A hot spring district known for the plumes of steam which rise up from the ground throughout its borders; the picturesque scenery this creates serves as a symbol of Beppu. Many of the famous Hells of Beppu (visually stunning hot springs which are meant to be viewed rather than bathed in) are located in this district, and the waters are famously described with the poetic phrase, 1,000 ryo (old coin) worth of hot water gush forth in a single night. The Bungo fudoki, an ancient record of the region compiled in the early Nara period, notes that much steam, boiling water, and hot mud emerges from the ground in this area; called a Hell since ancient times, it is believed the land here was long abhorred and feared. In the Kamakura period, after the great priest Ippen founded the Mushiyu bathhouse, many public bathhouses and ryokan inns came to be built one next to the other in the area. Even today, the places where hot spring waters emerge from the ground continue to generate an abundance of steam and are called Hells in the area. This hot spring district is perhaps the most celebrated and well-known of all those in Beppu.

  • Myoban Onsen
    Oita Beppushi-shi
    The eight Beppu Hatto hot spring districts boast the second greatest volume of hot spring waters in the world; Myoban Onsen is situated at the highest elevation of the eight and its yunohana-goya thatched huts, used to produce yunohana bath salts, give visitors a glimpse into old-fashioned Japanese hot spring bathing culture. 400 meters above sea level, the area also offers visitors a sweeping view of Beppu; Beppu Bay; and Myoban Bridge, the largest arch bridge in Asia. Each of the hot spring inns in the area have their own unique qualities and delightful surprises awaiting visitors. Okamotoya Shop, purveyor of nationally famous Jigoku-mushi Pudding, is also located here, and an unending stream of people makes their way to Myoban Onsen seeking this tasty treat. The Myoban Yu no Sato bathhouse produces yunohana hot spring mineral bath salts which have been designated a National Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property. Visitors can observe the production process and purchase their own yunohana to take home. The district also encompasses many day trip hot spring bathhouses and restaurants serving local cuisine.

  • Yufuin Onsen

    Oita Yufu-shi Yufuincho
    A tranquil hot spring area surrounded by abundant nature and fields located in the Yufuin Basin in the center of Oita Prefecture. With over 800 source springs, the area boasts one of the highest hot spring water production volumes in the country, and their smooth, velvety water, rich in moisturizing substances, are acclaimed for their skin beautifying properties. In addition, the waters of these simple springs are gentle and known for not being fatiguing even after a long soak, meaning that men and women of all ages can enjoy them safely. The area is also known for the arts and is dotted with art museums, galleries, and art cafes.

  • Nagayu Onsen
    Oita Taketa-shi Naoirimachi Nagayu 8043-1
    A hot spring district situated on a hill at the foot of Mt. Kuju in Oita Prefecture. The area's hot springs contain abundant quantities of carbon dioxide gas and in 2007 the district self-proclaimed itself as having the most highly carbonated springs in the country. Also purporting to have some of the most carbonated hot springs in the world, the area's waters are said to treat joint pain, muscle soreness, and chronic digestive diseases, in addition to aiding recovery from fatigue. The bubbles in the water cover the surface of the body, creating an insulating effect which further enhances the heat retaining properties of the water itself. In addition, these same waters also cause carbon dioxide levels in the blood to rise, resulting in a state of oxygen deficiency similar to that which occurs after intense exercise, and thus they are also said to increase one's metabolic rate and in turn promote weight loss. Some of Japan's most celebrated authors, such as Yasunari Kawabata and Akiko Yosano, loved this hot spring district, and monuments inscribed with their words dot the town.

  • Shiba Seki Onsen

    Oita Beppushi-shi
    Shibaseki means purple stone, and this hot spring district derives its name from the purple fossils found here in the Edo period. Boasting a long history, records state that Emperor Daigo and Emperor Goreizei came to be healed by the hot spring waters here in 895 and 1044, respectively. The waters of the simple hot spring found here are gentle on the skin and are said to treat a wide array of conditions, including easing nerve pain, muscle soreness, and sensitivity to cold and promoting health. The Shibaseki Hot Spring bathhouse, the area's only bathhouse, was designated a Recuperation Spa Area in 1997; this bathhouse has two indoor hot spring baths of differing temperatures, an outdoor bath, a steam bath, and a family bath. Surrounded by natural beauty, the area has also been designated a Hot Spring Health Resort alongside Kannawa Onsen and Myoban Onsen, as well as a National Hot Spring Health Resorts in recognition of its powerful recuperative effects.

  • Beppu Hot spring village

    A hot spring district boasting some of the largest number of source springs and greatest amount of water flow in the country. Each year some four million visitors come here. In addition to Beppu, the area is dotted with eight other large hot spring districts-Kannawa, Myoban, Hamawaki, Shibaseki, Kankaiji, Horita, and Kamegawa - and for ages they have been called the Eight Beppu Hot Springs by medicinal hot spring-lovers. In addition to traditional hot spring inns, there are also sand baths, footbaths, drinkable hot spring water facilities, day trip hot spring facilities, and an abundance of other hot spring and bathing facilities standing eave to eave here, and visitors can enjoy hot spring waters in a variety of ways.

  • Yunohira Onsen
    Oita Yufu-shi Yufuincho Yunohira
    This hot spring district, one of Japan's most famous, is said to have first been developed some 800 years ago during the Kamakura period. The district's current town area took shape in the late Edo period and is even recorded in the Bungo kokushi, a history of the region. In 1959, the district was designated a National Hot Spring . The waters of the area's sodium chloride sulfate springs have a pH of 9.1 and are said to treat such ailments as gastrointestinal disorders, nerve pain, muscle soreness, joint pain, frozen shoulders, motor paralysis, chronic digestive diseases, chronic constipation, and stress. The district encompasses 21 hot spring lodging facilities and five public bathhouses, ensuring that both those staying overnight here and those just passing through for the day can enjoy the area's healing hot spring waters. Yunohira is also full of sightseeing destinations, such as the area's hilly, stone-paved streets, built some 300 years ago; and firefly watching, which can be enjoyed around the Kagonogawa River from 20:00 to 21:00 from late May to early June.

  • Hita Onsen
    Oita Hita-shi Kuma
    Situated in Hita, a city famous for its 200 year old tradition of pleasure boating as well as cormorant fishing, since ancient times this hot spring district has been said to grant children to those having difficulty conceiving. Those staying at the hot spring inns in the district can enjoy an evening meal on a pleasure boat while watching cormorant fishing. The waters of the area's simple springs are purported to treat such modern lifestyle diseases as rheumatism, nerve pain, and fatigue. The area has been blessed with an abundance of water since ancient times and an abundance of events are held here, such as the Hita Hina Festival at the beginning of the year; the Mikuma River Tourism Festival, which coincides with the start of the ayu fishing season; the Hita Gion Festival in summer; and the Hita Tenryo Festival in Autumn. Area visitors can also enjoy touring historic sites, such Ontayaki no Sato, birthplace of the National Important Intangible Cultural Property-designated Onta ware; and the House of Gyotoku Family, the residence of a family which first served as the official healers of Kurume Domain and later became modern doctors.

  • Hamawaki Onsen

    Oita Beppushi-shi
    Together with Beppu, Kamegawa, Kannawa, Kankaiji, Horita, Shibaseki, and Myoban, this hot spring district is one of the eight Beppu Hatto spas and, alongside Kannawa Onsen; it is considered the birthplace of the Beppu Onsen group of hot springs. Hamawaki means seaside but can also mean welling forth at the beach, a name it gained from the fact that a hot spring does indeed gush forth from the beach here. From the early Kamakura period through the Edo period, the area developed as a key land transportation point. The waters of the simple hot spring here are gentle on the skin and are said to ease lower back pain, sprains, sensitivity to cold and mild asthma. Unusual among the municipal public bathhouses in Beppu City, the Hamawaki Hot Spring bathhouse is open until late at night and is frequented by a broad range of customers.
