  • Sakihana Onsen
    Niigata Gosen-shi Sadori
    A hot spring district which generates some of the greatest quantities of piping hot water of any in Niigata Prefecture. According to legend, the area's name was once written with characters meaning flowers ahead, but this was changed to different but identically pronounced characters meaning blooming flowers after the hot springs here were discovered, an allusion to the yubana hot spring mineral flower crusts they generate. The waters of the area's simple sulfur springs are said to be effective for general indication and treat such ailments as chronic skin diseases, chronic women's diseases, cuts, diabetes, high blood pressure, and hardening of the arteries. A money-saving pass called the Yumeguri Tegata is sold at participating hot spring inns; the pass enables users to visit the bathhouses of any three participating inns of their choice. The district also makes a convenient place from which to base area sightseeing activities, and some of the many places where visitors can enjoy local scenery and history include Mizubasho Park; Shiroato Park, the site of the castle where the Hori clan once resided; and the Hayade River valley.

  • Utsukushigahara Onsen

    The history of this quiet hot spring district dates all the way back to the beginning of the Nara period. The area's hot springs are even noted in the Nihon shoki, Japan's oldest historical record. The waters of the mildly alkaline simple hot springs found here are said to treat ailments such as nerve pain and hardening of the arteries, and the district has been designated a National Hot Spring by the Ministry of the Environment. There are many elegant and atmospheric traditional ryokan inns and hotels in the area, including those whose bathhouse facilities are open to non-guests as well. The Fureai Yamabekan, a day trip hot spring bathhouse, also offers soba noodle making classes for tourists (reservation required). The Fureai Yamabekan has spacious indoor baths as well as an adjoining outdoor bath area and is the perfect place for a casual hot spring dip. National Treasure-designated Matsumoto Castle, Matsumoto's most celebrated sightseeing destination; and the Kaichi School Museum, notable for its lovely Taisho Roman era architecture, are located 15 minutes away. An abundant array of other sightseeing attractions can also be found within a two hour drive radius.

    Niigata Tokamachi-shi Matsunoyama
    Known as one of Japan’s three great medicinal springs alongside Kusatsu Onsen and Arima Onsen, this hot spring area has been used for therapeutic bathing since ancient times. The waters of the area’s hot springs come from a 12 million year old fossil ocean and contain an abundance of salt and antibacterial metaboric acid. These chloride springs (hypertonic mildly alkaline high temperature springs) have an extremely powerful heating effect which warms the body to the core.
  • Yamada Onsen
    Nagano Kamitakai-gun Takayamamura Yamada Onsen 3580
    This hot spring district, one of the eight which make up the Shinshu Takayama Onsenkyo hot spring village, was first developed 200 years ago, has been a favorite of many writers and artists, such as Ogai Mori. Nestled between mountains, the elegant and atmospheric district centers around the Ohyu, a public bathhouse built in the Momoyama architectural style. The colorless waters of the area's sulfur-containing sodium calcium chloride springs are said to treat an abundant array of ailments, including nerve pain, muscle soreness, joint pain, frozen shoulders, and motor paralysis. Situated along Matsukawakyo Gorge in Joshin'etsukogen National Park, in the past the district has been selected as number one on a list of Japan's 100 most beautiful fall foliage destinations. There are eight hot spring lodging facilities in the district, each with their own character, and here guests can enjoy a relaxing soak along with the lovely, seasonal scenery of the gorge. There are also three day trip hot spring bathhouses here, so even area travelers on their way to someplace else can stop by and enjoy the local healing hot spring waters.

  • Yomogihira Onsen
    Niigata Nagaoka-shi Yomogihiramachi
    This hot spring district, serving as the retreat of Echigo Nagaoka, was first developed with the building of a hot spring hotel in 1869 and has flourished as a therapeutic hot spring bathing destination ever since. Even today, the waters of the area's simple sulfur and simple alkaline hot springs are beloved by many; leaving the skin silky smooth, they are particularly popular with women. These waters are also said to treat such ailments as skin diseases, women's diseases, cuts, hardening of the arteries, high blood pressure, and high blood sugar. Nearby Koryu-jinja Shrine is a Shinto shrine boasting 600 years of history, and many worshippers from all over the country make their way to this sacred site. Some of area's many other sightseeing destinations where visitors can come in contact with local history and nature include Takenokochi Fudo-jinja Shrine, Fudo Falls, the Yamakoshi Rice Terraces, and Yukyuzan Park (known to locals as Oyama Park).

  • Gokayama Onsen

    Alongside Shirakawa-go, Gokayama is one of the few places in Japan where traditional thatched roof houses stand en masse, and these structures were designated a World Heritage Site in 1995. The Gokayama Onsen hot spring district encompasses an inn where novelist Ryotaro Shiba stayed as well as the Iwase-ke, a huge thatched roof home open to tourists. The waters of the area's sulfate springs are said to treat ailments such as nerve pain and muscle soreness, in addition to preventing post-bath chills. Area destinations such as the Gokayama Folk Museum, Lake Katsura, and the thatched roof homes of the villages of Suganuma and Ainokura provide more than enough things to see and do, but visitors can also enjoy hot spring bathing together with seasonal picturesque scenery, too. Gokayama visitors can also find short classes where they can try handmade Japanese washi paper making, pottery painting, harie paper patch painting, and Gokayama tofu making.

  • Aoki Mineral Spring
    Yamanashi Nirasaki-shi Seitetsumachi Aoki 3350
    A hot spring district standing at the entranceway to a trail leading up Three Mt. Hoosanzan, a mountain straddling Minami-Alps City, Nirasaki City, and Hokuto City and considered one of Japan's 100 most famous mountains. The area's odorless, mildly acidic waters contain an abundance of calcium and iron as well as trace amounts of sodium. These waters are said to treat heart disease, gastrointestinal disorders, stomach ulcers, nerve pain, anemia, and many other conditions. Surrounded by forest, the area's only hot spring inn, also called Aoki Kosen, enables visitors to enjoy the ultimate luxury that comes with staying in an area with nothing but wild, natural beauty all around. The inn, a reconstruction of the building which stood here in the early Meiji period, employs sashikamoi architecture and makes no of any nails whatsoever. It is said that the Meiji period poet, Keigetsu Omachi, regularly stayed here. Situated 1,150 meters above sea level, the inn's elegant round window serves as a symbol of the facility.

  • Wakura Onsen
    Ishikawa Nanao-shi Wakuramachi
    A hot spring district located on the sea, a rarity in Japan, which according to records was discovered in the Daido era (806-810). Many hot spring hotels stand side by side along Nanao Bay, and in these facilities visitors can take a relaxing bath in hot spring waters while taking in the view of the vast ocean beyond. The area's chloride springs are rich in minerals and are said to aid recovery from fatigue and promote health as well as easing muscle soreness, skin diseases, and sensitivity to cold. The area is renowned for the beauty of its sunsets and is a highly popular driving destination. The Wakura Onsen Summer Fireworks display is also held each summer, and during this event the area bustles with many visitors come to enjoy the show.

  • Yumura Onsen
    Yamanashi Kofu Yumura
    This history-leaden hot spring district is said to have been discovered by the great monk Kobo Daishi, the founder of Shingon Buddhism, some 1,200 years ago. Also used by the likes of Takeda Shingen, Dazai Osamu, and many other famous samurai and men of culture, this area has been designated a National Hot Spring Health Resorts. The waters of the area's colorless chloride springs and sulfate springs are characterized by a velvety soft feel; gentle on the skin, they can be comfortably bathed in by men and women of all ages. These waters have strong moisturizing and heat retaining properties and are renowned for leaving the skin smooth and preventing post-bath chills. The area is dotted with scenic locations such as Shosenkyo Gorge as well as many facilities offering fruit picking for visitors to enjoy.

  • Utsukushigahara Kogen Onsen

    The collective term for a hot spring district encompassing Oboke, Yunohara, Fujii, and other hot springs located on the Utsukushigahara Highland in the northwest of Yatsugatake-Chushin Kogen Quasi-National Park. The area was designated a National Hot Spring Health Resorts in 1983 and a National Hot Spring in 1986 by the Ministry of the Environment. The area's mildly alkaline simple hot springs have a temperature of 40.5° C. The history of the area is extensive and it was even noted in the Nihon shoki, Japan's oldest historical record. Minamoto no Shigeyuki, one of the 36 Immortals of Poetry, wrote a poem describing the activity of this hot spring district, stating, The white threads boiling forth/from the gushing hot water/are used by the unending stream of people. Also patronized by generations of lords ruling over Matsumoto Castle, this area is one of Shinshu's top hot spring districts.
