This black pine tree stands on the east side of Place of Scenic Beauty-designated Kotohiki Park, which is also a part of Setonaikai National Park. “Neagari” means “rising roots,” and as its name implies, the roots of this ancient pine are exposed and rise high off the ground. It is believed this is a result of several conditions working together, including the weathering of the ground over the years and the pine’s age, but regardless as to how it came to look like it does, the pine is one of only a few examples found in the country with such stunningly exposed roots and which is also still growing quite vigorously. “Neagari” can also mean “rising prices” or “rising value” in Japanese, and as such the pine is also famously believed to improve financial luck and is visited by people from across the country to pray for a salary raise or for the price of their favorite stock to rise.

Kagawa Areas

around-area-map

Japan’s smallest prefecture, Kagawa, may take up just a small corner of Shikoku, but it has grown increasingly popular with the recognition of Naoshima, its "art island" in the Seto Inland Sea between Shikoku and Honshu. Just a stone’s throw from the islands, mainland Kagawa’s prefectural capital, Takamatsu, holds history in its castle ruins and its pride and joy, Ritsurin Garden, is known as one of the country’s best gardens.
