  • Yamato Museum

    A museum which presents the history of the city of Kure, which prospered as a shipbuilding town and which was the location where the battleship Yamato was built as well as numerous large tankers which served after the Second World War. A one tenth scale Yamato battleship model stands in the Yamato Hiroba in the museum and is the centerpiece of the museum’s exhibits. The first floor exhibition room presents historical materials relating to Kure from the end of the shogunate government up through Japan’s postwar period as well as a real Zero Fighter Type 62 and a Kaiten Human Torpedo Type 10. On the third floor, visitors can learn scientific and technological principles with a focus on ships via interactive exhibits such as a ship piloting simulator. The “Kaigun-san no Curry,” traditional Japanese naval-style curry sold in the museum shop, makes a popular souvenir.

    A museum housed in the Former Official Residence of the Commander-in-Chief of the Kure Naval Station, a National Important Cultural Property built in 1905, located inside Irifuneyama Park a 13 minute walk from Kure Station. The museum building consists of a wooden Western-style structure as well as a Japanese-style hall. The Western portion of the building has a British-style exterior; the drawing room, decorated with rare “kinkarashi” gold patterned Japanese leather paper is a must-see. The grounds are also dotted with cultural properties and facilities where visitors can learn about the history of Kure since the Meiji period, including a hall dedicated to local culture, historical folk custom exhibit, and small clock tower once used at the former Kure naval arsenal.

    静かです。亀山神社が、昔し鎮座していた場所です。来場者が少なく、ゆっくり見ることが出来ます。職員は入船山の事をあまり知らないようで、説明看板も少なく、残念です。食事などをすることはできません。お茶の販売機は有ります。夏、冬は、冷暖房の設備がない為、服装に気お付けて下さい。

    Hiroshima Pref. Kureshi Saiwaichou In Funami Park
    This art museum featuring hexagonal brick walls is located inside of Irifuneyama Park in Kure City, Hiroshima Prefecture. Visits can see permanent and special exhibits that focus on the works of local artists. The museum also holds events such as the Citizen’s Gallery, an exhibition of works by local citizens. Known fondly as “Museum Road,” the hilly road near the museum is has been selected as one of Japan’s Best 100 Roads.

    呉駅から徒歩10分ちょっとのところにある呉市立美術館です。『この世界の片隅で』展を見に行ってきました。 平日の朝イチ。観覧者は私だけでした。チケットはHPクーポン使い400円でした。 漫画の原画が沢山展示され、当時の時代背景が説明されてるのが良かったです。館内は写真撮影禁止でした。

    It is a public relations facility of the Maritime Self-Defense Force in Kure City. It has been opened free of charge to the public since 2007. An authentic large submarine is displayed onshore and is a valuable spot where you can actually board the vessel and see and experience the life and environment inside a submarine. In addition, there are exhibits introducing the history of the Maritime Self-Defense Force and its relationship with Kure, and introduces the threat of mines and the activities of mine-sweeping vessels. There is also a shop where you can purchase Self- Defense Force goods and souvenirs of Kure.

    "A Shinto shrine located in Kure City, Hiroshima Prefecture. Viewed as the patron shrine of Kure City, this Hachiman shrine is dedicated to Emperor Ojin, Empress Jingu, and Emperor Chuai. Located on a hill, visitors to the grounds can enjoy a sweeping view of Kure Bay. The shrine's grand Yabu festival is famous for its abundance of participants, leading to its nickname as the ""people festival."" During the festival, shrine parishioners carry a portable shrine with a straw barrel filled with new rice; meanwhile, messengers of the goods called ""Yabu"" poke and prod the barrel with bamboo poles, attempting to delay the parishioners. The contest between the parishioners and Yabu can last hours."

    呉を一望に見晴らす高台に鎮座している氏神様。呉鎮守府の設置に伴い現在の入船山公園から移転したそうだ。歴代の鎮守府司令長官は着退任の際には参拝し、艦船将兵も呉への入出港の時は参詣、歴史は受け継がれ年頭には海自呉地方総監も参詣を行なっている

    Counted as one of the world’s three major naval academies the JMSDF the First Service School is located at the site of the former Imperial Naval Academy. There are many places to see such as the stately, red brick former Imperial Naval Academy Student Pavilion and the Great Auditorium. It is also used as a film location. Visitors are prohibited from touring the site freely, and are required not to leave before the tour ends. Give yourself plenty of time when you visit and follow the information from the guide.

    This is an art museum made of Japanese cypress encompassing Japanese architectural beauty. Works by Yokoyama Taikan, Fukuda Heihachiro and other artists representing Japanese modern art as well as works by local artists are exhibited. Also, music concerts are held on the third Saturday of every month.

    Had a hard time finding information on anything other than the museums so we weren’t sure what to expect. The town that the museums are in is so lovely and the people were all so nice! We visited 4...

    A Japanese garden on Shimokamagari-jima Island in Kure City, Hiroshima Prefecture, which long served as a cornerstone of maritime traffic in the area as well as a port for Korean delegation to Japan and for samurai traveling to and from Edo. A circular garden built around a central pond, the Sannose Seto serves as a background. Visitors can enjoy the garden’s beautiful pines and scenery. There are several museums inside the garden which presents the history of Korean delegation to Japan, a museum displaying a collection of lamps, an art museum modeled after an Edo period guardhouse, and a porcelain museum.

  • Rekishi-no-mieru-oka-koen Park

    A park built on a hill overlooking Kure Port in Kure City, Hiroshima Prefecture. Meaning “hill from which you can see history,” the park offers a view of the covered dock where the battleship Yamato and other vessels were built, as well as other former Japanese naval facilities. At this famous tourism destination, you can feel the history of the city of Kure, which was established as Kure Naval District in the Meiji period and later transitioned from naval port town to peacetime industrial city. The park has a memorial to the Yamato built in the shape of its bridge which is also flanked by models of the armor-piercing shells its main gun fired, a plaque dedicated to the ship-building dock, and a stone monument inscribed with a haiku by Masaoka Shiki.
  • The Old Imperial Japanese Navy Cemetery (Nagasako Park)

    Opened as a burial ground for soldiers of the former Japan Imperial Navy in 1890, it is now a cemetery that is being maintained as Nagasako Park. In the park are numerous tombstones and monuments erected before the war, including a memorial with the names of those who died with the sinking of the battleship, Yamato. The park is also famous as the setting for the war film, Yamato, which was released in 2005. Take the bus from Kure Station and get off at the Nagasakocho bus stop.

    This museum facility is located on the grounds of Hiroshima Prefectural Beach facing the Aki-nada sea. The museum recreates an archeological excavation of the site of an ancient earthenware salt production facility, enabling visitors to see what the site looked like when it was being investigated by archeologists. The site’s salt production furnace is believed to have been 110 by 180 centimeters and to have been paved inside with circular flat stones around 20 centimeters in size and five centimeters thick. Sue ware and Haji ware pottery used to make salt around the fifth century, have also been excavated in the area. Inside, visitors can also try making seaweed salt, an ancient variety of salt produced by heating seaweed (specifically, Sargassum fulvellum) in an earthenware pot and then drying it.

    This museum is located in Kure City, Hiroshima Prefecture, and is where you can see exhibited documents on the history and culture of local port town, Mitarai. In addition, it is attached to the restored building of the Otomeza, used as a theatre and cinema is the early Showa period (1926–1989). You can see things such as a movie poster exhibit and drop curtain with tall lanterns depicted, bringing many movie fans.

    A Shinto shrine standing in lush Mitate Park a five minute walk from Saijo Station. A Gion shrine was built in the area dedicated to the god Susanoo-no-mikoto, worshipped for providing healing from illness, when a plague was sweeping the land in 706. Thereafter, through merging with other nearby shrines, Mitate-jinja Shrine was ultimately moved here. There is a “Matsuo-jinja Shrine” on the shrines grounds whose enshrined deity was ritually divided from the one in Matsuo-jinja Shrine in Kyoto; the shrine is renowned for the blessings it is believed to provide in matters relating to sake. Mitate-jinja Shrine front shrine contains numerous sake casks donated to the shrine by local sake makers.

    The Wakaebisu-ya was a famous chaya (traditional place of feasts and entertainment by geisha) proud of the biggest scale in Mitarai area in the Edo period. The surviving buildings are beautifully constructed with ceilings and shutters made from Yakusugi cedar wood and in the garden the grave of Yaemurasaki, a famous courtesan stands. Wakaebisu-ya was designated as a Historic Site by Hiroshima Prefectural Government in 1940.

    Hiroshima Kure-shi Ondocho Iwashihama
    This memorial marker stands at the foot of the Ondo-ohashi Bridge. According to legend, the mighty samurai leader Taira no Kiyomori once called back the setting sun here; threw countless stones into the ocean, each carved with a single character comprising the entirety of a sutra, in place of a human sacrifice to be conducted; and opened up the Ondo-no-Seto strait in a single day. This marker was erected to memorialize Kiyomori and honor his achievements respecting human life. The marker is encircled by a roughly 40-meter-long stone fence and the site was designated a Historic Site by the prefecture in 1951.

    This old Japanese estate sprawls behind the majestic wooden Rantokaku Art Museum building. The estate was moved here at the end of the Edo period by Yamaji Kikoku, a wealthy farmer in what is now Numakuma-cho, Fukuyama City, and turned into a place for the study of Chinese classics which was visited by many scholars. Inside, the estate features many elaborate architectural touches. Of particular note is the Japanese-style room on the first floor with moveable walls, which is one of only a very few examples to survive into the present time; here visitors can take a break in between exploring the estate, sip on Matcha green tea, and gaze at the estate’s garden.

    This ancient Shinto shrine is situated on a hill overlooking the coast and pines of Katsurahama, selected for inclusion in a list of Japan’s 100 most beautiful stretches of sandy beach and green pine. The shrine is dedicated to the three Munakata Sanjo-shin goddesses who protect those who work on the sea, and the three Usa YahataHachiman gods of military commanders. The main shrine, rebuilt in 1489, is constructed in the nagare-zukuri style with three bays and a front room space. The shingled roof is said to have been installed in its current form in 1499. Primarily made of wood, the shrine’s design is simple yet features several touches which are largely not seen in other shrines in the prefecture, such as the use of round columns even for the eave pillars, and it has been designated a National Important Cultural Property.

    This area on the eastern edge of Osaki Shimo-jima Island is called Mitarai and it served as a secret trading port between Hiroshima Domain and Satsuma Domain at the end of the Edo period. It is said that this Tenmangu shrine was established when a government official from Hiroshima Domain, Funakoshi Juzaemon, donated funds to build a shrine in 1871. According to legend, the great scholar Sugawara no Michizane visited the shrine when he was demoted to a minor post in Dazaifu and washed his hands using the Hongawa Well behind the shrine, and some say this is the origin of the area’s name, which literally translates to “hand washing.”

    This estate is located in a picturesque part on the eastern side of the Mitarai district. The estate belonged to the Tada family, whose members served as town elders and village headmen at the end of the Edo period. Today, the estate is a maintained as a rest area and museum. “Shichikyo-ochi (the exile of the Seven Nobles)” refers to the incident where seven anti-shogunato court nobles including Sanjo Sanetomi were chased out of Kyoto and fled to Choshu after a coup d'etat in 1863 by a more moderate faction advocating for Kobu-Gattai (unification of the Imperial court and the Shogunato). The following year, the group of nobles, now five in number but still dreaming of returning to Kyoto, spent a night in this very estate. In 1940, the estate was designated a Historic Site by Hiroshima Prefecture.

There is more than meets the eye awaiting any Hiroshima-bound traveler. Kicking off in Hiroshima city, the Peace Memorial Park, Hiroshima Castle, and Shukkeien Garden offer a couple of days of exploring; however, the real beauty lies along the southern coast of the prefecture. There, a series of islands spreads across the Seto Inland Sea: from the mysterious sea-submerged Great Torii Gate at Miyajima Island to the first half of the islands that connect Honshu to Shikoku via six spectacular suspension bridges.
