A Shinto shrine situated along the Nishi-Oumi Highway in Ukawa, Takashima City. Dedicated to Sarutahiko-no-mikoto, the shrine is said to grant worshippers long life. Because of the shrine’s large torii gate standing in the waters of Lake Biwa, the shrine is also known as the “Itsukushima of Omi.”

It is an easy flat walk from Omi-Takashima Station to the shrine with lots to see along the way - Omizo Castle ruins, Otomegaike Pond, rice fields and the 48 buddhas. We took lunch and picnicked at...

A museum located in 1 Chome Nakanuma Imazu-cho, Takashima City. The museum contains exhibits on the “Biwako Shuko no Uta” (“The Lake Biwa Circumnavigation Song”), which was created in the Taisho period when students in the Aquatic Department at the Third Higher School (now Kyoto University) came to circumnavigate Lake Biwa and stayed in Imazu. The museum introduces the creators of the song and also has a corner where visitors can listen to various singers performing the song.

"This Shingon Chisan Buddhist temple is located a five-minute drive from JR Makino Station. The ninth temple on the Saigoku Kannon Pilgrimage, it is widely known as the ""Osaki Kannon."" In addition to being able to see Lake Biwa from the observatory in front of the main temple building, some of the temple's many highlights include the Amidado hall, which was built with wood which is still stained with blood from the battle which led to the fall of Azuchi Castle; a statue said to have been created by Prince Shotoku; and two ancient pines called the Senkanmatsu and the Bentenmatsu. In the spring, cherry trees growing on the grounds come into beautiful bloom. As the temple is located a 30-minute walk from the nearest bus station, visitors are encouraged to rent a bicycle at the train station."

    Shiga Takashima-shi Kutsuki Miya-mae Bo 289
A 15-minute walk from the Kutsukiyakuba-mae bus stop. This pagoda is located close to the Miyamaebo (Ue) bus stop and is believed to have been the inner sanctuary of Ninigi Shrine, a Shinto shrine dedicated to Ninigi-no-Mikoto; or to have belonged to the Kutsuki Jinguji shrine and temple complex adjoining Ninigi Shrine to the east. It is believed the pagoda was originally built in 859 and rebuilt in 1842. The wooden pagoda consists of two tiers and has an appearance which invokes a sense of stability. The pagoda enshrines 23 wooden statues of Bhaisajyaguru and a statue of Gautama Buddha created in the distant Kamakura period. During the shrine's regular festival, held on May 10th every year, the god to which the shrine is dedicated is ritually transferred to a portable shrine and paraded around in a well-known event.

The ruins of Toju Shoin, a former lecture hall, are located a 15-minute walk from Adogawa Station. It was the site of the home and study of Nakae Toju, one of Japan's earliest followers of the Yangming School of Neo-Confucianism. It has now been rebuilt and is a National Historic Site. In the living quarters, visitors can see displays of Toju's calligraphy, personal effects, and writings, giving them an idea of the course of mastery of ancient learning. Visitors become so absorbed in reading Nakae Toju's writings, that they scarcely notice the passage of time.

A 10-minute walk from JR Adogawa Station. This memorial museum is located next to the Tojukinenkan-mae bus stop. Nakano Toju was an early Edo period Confucianist born in Omi who is also celebrated as the forefather of Japanese neo-Confucianism, and the museum displays his personal affects and other items. This National Tangible Cultural Property-designated structure is located just southwest of the Takashima City Kutsuki Branch Office. Today, the building is operated by a local women's group.

    Travel / Tourism
    Shiga Takashima-shi Imazucho Sanami 727
"A five-minute walk from the Sanamiguchi bus stop, and 15 minutes from the Ii bus stop. This Shingon Chisan Buddhist temple is situated at the foot of a mountain encircled by Shinto shrines west of a residential area in the Sanami district. ""Sanami,"" the name of both the area and the temple, literally means ""sake wave"" and is derived from a local legend about a huge serpent which troubled the area until it was given large quantities of sake and destroyed. Visitors can take in the temple's historic structures, including a Kannondo hall so beautiful it was known even to the people living in Kyoto, the main temple, belfry, and Gomado hall. One of the temple's biggest highlights is a huge cherry tree, known as the Gyoki-zakura; estimated to be some 300 years old, the tree still comes into beautiful bloom in spring. The temple is also one of the temples which make up the Saigoku 33 Kannon pilgrimage."
