“Tensodo Cave” in the town of Nishiizu is a sea cave made from white tuff (a type of volcanic rock). The cave has three entrances: one in the east, the west and the south. From the south exit, the pleasure boats go as far as the center of the cave. In the centre of the cave, there is a big round hole in the ceiling, and the way the light shines into the cave through this hole is mysteriously beautiful. Tensodo was designated as a Natural Monument of Japan in 1935.

The site was used as a quarry for Izu Ishi, a specialty stone used for the stonewalls of Edo Castle, until around 1954. There is also a cave where bats live, providing a bit of a thrill.

Shizuoka Areas

With the giant Pacific Ocean to the south and the great Mount Fuji to the north, Shizuoka prefecture is blessed with some of the best views the country has to offer. The white sand beaches of the Izu Peninsula are a rare find on mainland Japan, neighbored by beautiful cliffs, tumbling hills, and natural hot springs. As Japan’s largest producer of green tea, the age-old tradition of tea drinking is ubiquitous in Shizuoka, from the miles of tea fields to the old tea houses hosting traditional tea ceremonies.
