This is a memorial hall for literary master Toson Shimazaki, active from the Meiji to Showa periods, and is located in Magome-juku, Nakatsugawa City, Gifu Prefecture. Built on the site of the Toson household, the designated daimyo inn of Magome-juku, 5,000 items including documents, scripts and personal effects donated by oldest son Kusuo Shimazaki have been collected and displayed. Among these, highlights include the handwritten manuscripts of “Wakanashu”, “Yoake Mae”, “Arashi”, and his last work Toho-no-Mon”. His Oiso Town, Kanagawa Prefecture study where he spent his final days has been restored, and through the displays one can learn about the author’s whole life.

As my major was literature, I am interested in Toson’s novels. This is one of the reasons why I visited Magome. If you don’t know him, you had better to read his works first. Then, your visit will be...

Located 25 minutes away from JR Owari-Ichinomiya Station by taxi, this pharmaceutical museum is inside Eisai’s Kawashima Plant. It runs various exhibits related to pharmaceuticals including the history of medicine and pharmacology. You can also see precious items such as human-powered pharmaceutical production machinery, signboards, advertisements and Meiji period (1868-1912) medicine. Because there are English explanation panels and captions, even foreign tourists can enjoy and learn. In addition, in the temporary exhibition room, they hold special exhibits introducing materials with themes based on what the curators have researched every year. It is a great place not only for adults, but for children’s research projects.

This art gallery is located a 15-minute walk from Nagaragawa Railway Minoshi Station, and exhibits the Mino City’s prize-winning autumn “Mino Washi Akari Art Exhibit.” Inside the gallery, a town with udatsu walls (good for fire protection and symbolizing wealth) is reproduced in a soft and warm light through Mino washi (traditional Japanese paper). Although the work cannot be touched, you are free to take photographs. There is also a museum shop lined with highly artistic lanterns. The wooden two-stories building is a nationally registered tangible cultural property since it is a valuable structure that is as it was in the early Showa era (1926-1989).

A MUST when in Mino. It is very beautiful. An exhibition of many lanterns and paper craft. It was my second visit here.

Located only a three-minute walk south of JR Ena Station, this museum houses works of the world-famous ukiyo-e artist, Utagawa Hiroshige. Most of the collection consists of woodblock print ukiyo-e such as “The Sixty-nine Stations of the Kiso Kaido” of his mature period, and the exhibits change nearly every month. In the Ukiyo-e Navi Room, a permanent installation, visitors can learn all about woodblock prints in an enjoyable way. An especially popular feature is the “Make Your Own Woodblock Print” corner, where visitors can use fake plates and apply layers of stamp ink to make their own woodblock print to take home.

An interactive, activity-oriented science museum, one of only a few in the country, located a 10-minute drive from the Mizunami Interchange on the Chuo Expressway. The museum has very few exhibits, and instead visitors can deepen their interest and understanding of science while having fun participating in the various experiments and creation events the museum holds. Enjoy a variety of experiments and experiences like the museum's hour long science shows combining images projected on a big screen with experiments performed on a stage, and special workshops where you can enjoy an experiment show conducted right in front of your eyes. The museum also holds public courses through which you can explore science more deeply.

The Honko-ji Temple is a temple belonging to the Hongan-ji sect of the Jodo Shinshu School of Buddhism, located in Hida City, Gifu Prefecture. The temple is renowned as one of the finest in the Hida region thanks to its magnificent Hon-do main hall (made almost entirely from Japanese Cypress wood), Shoro (bell tower), and San-mon (main gate). The Honko-ji Temple is one of the temples visited in the Hida Furukawa Three Temples Pilgrimage, an important winter event in the Hida-Furukawa region that takes place on January 15 every year. On this day, the banks of the Setogawa River and the historic streets are lined with around one thousand traditional Japanese-style candles and large “snow candles”; in this magical atmosphere, pilgrims visit and pray at first the Honko-ji Temple, then the Enko-ji Temple and the Shinshu-ji Temple.
