    Gifu Pref. Enashi Iwamurachou Shiroyama
One of Japan’s three major mountain castles, Iwamura Castle—also known as “Kirigajo” —is a well-fortified mountain castle that cleverly uses the landscape—a 180 meter drop—as a natural defense. You could easily call the grand stone walls “the Machu Picchu of the East,” and they will leave castle lovers breathless. The 700-year history of this castle is unmatched by any other castle in Japan. About 20 minutes by car via the Ena Interchange on the Chuo Expressway.

This temple with ties to Oda Nobunaga belongs to the Myoshinji school of Rinzai Zen Buddhism. To reach it, you can take a city loop bus counterclockwise from JR Gifu Station or Meitetsu Gifu Station, get off at the Nagaragawa Convention Center North Entrance stop, and walk three minutes. Oda Nobunaga’s Family Grave is there, with the remains and mortuary tablets of the Nobunagas and Nobutadas. The main hall's Chitenjo with floorboards from Gifu Castle stained by the blood of soldiers is well known, and the hall has valuable items on display. In autumn the colored leaves of the dodan-tsutsuji shrubs in their garden are superb. They hold the Oda Nobunaga Memorial Ceremony on the first Saturday of October every year.

"This art museum is located a ten-minute walk from Ogaki Station's South Exit. It exhibits works and materials of the Japanese artist Tadashi Moriya, praised in his hometown as an honorary citizen of Ogaki and a recipient of the Order of Cultural Merit. ""The Melody of Rokudan Sounds in Vienna: Brahms and Countess Toda"" is his masterpiece from his prime with the theme of international exchange. It is a historical painting that depicts an encounter between east and west, with the decoration of a koto and smoke from an incense burner to the patterns of chairs and carpets that were popular at the time. This work and other difficult-to-preserve Japanese paintings are not on permanent display, but about 3,300 works are rotated and displayed every two months."

Saito Toshinaga was a military commander who ruled over Kano. He was devoted to Tenmangu Shrine and had Tenman installed as a guardian deity when he built Kutsui Castle in 1445. Kutsui Castle was abandoned after that, but the locals maintained their belief in the shrine. When Tokugawa Ieyasu built Kano Castle in 1600, as the shrine is on the premises, he had it moved to its current location and rededicated. It enshrines Sugawara-no-Michizane. Known as a deity of scholarship, lots of worshipers come to pray for success with exams.

The characteristic heavy facade of this museum of folk art is modeled after the gate of the second wall of Takayama Castle. The museum houses a collection of approximately 2,500 pieces of antiques and folk art amassed over 70 years by Takayama's resident doctor, Tadaichi Fujii. The building in which the collection is displayed is a clay structure built over five years using all cypress wood in the Edoman style. The building has walls that are nearly one meter thick. The wide-ranging collection contains, among other things, Kyoho dolls made over 270 years ago, hanging scrolls by Yokoyama Taikan and Ikkyu, and Kutani and Imari ware.

This museum is part of the Japan Taisho Village Theme Park which reproduces the ambiance of a Taisho period town. It's five minutes on foot from Akechi Railway's Akechi Station. They hold planned exhibits several times a year. They also have a display about the Emperor Taisho, a symbol of the Taisho period, and a display on daily life that uses period realia to reproduce a typical household. The first floor has newspapers of the period and retro posters, and the adjacent Cafe Tenkyu feels just like a coffee shop from the era.

This is one of the temples which Ashikaga Takauji and his brother Tadayoshi, the founders of the Muromachi Shogunate, ordered built across Japan. It was founded in 1347 by converting Shorinji Temple in Kokufu. It originally had a complete seven-structured temple compound and nine sub-temples, but most of it was destroyed during the Warring States period. The rotating sutra shelf in the scripture house which survived the fires is the oldest of its kind in Japan. It's one of the few sutra repositories to be declared a National Treasure, along with those at Horyuji Temple and Toshodaiji Temple. The Senshin no Mori forest behind the temple has numerous cultural assets, and you can do a walk taking in some of the 33 sacred spots of the Saigoku Pilgrimage.
