This is a house where Mt. Fuji’s Oshi (low ranking Shinto priest) priests have worked for generations. Oshi were people who carried out missionary work and prayer for the Mt. Fuji religious faith, looking after the lodgings and meals of Fujiko believers who were making the pilgrimage up Mt. Fuji. This is a presently existing invaluable building which supported the Mt. Fuji faith. The main building which was constructed in 1768 has been designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan in 2011. It is also a constituent asset of the World Heritage Fuji, and you can see materials such goshinzen room and mountain climbing costumes at the Residence.

Its small but the entrance fee is very cheap. When visited in conjunction with the nearby Kitaguchi-hongu Fuji Sengen Shrine, it gives you an idea of how one starts a pilgrimage to Mt Fuji.

A Torii gate just a five-minute walk from Mt. Fuji Station or a five-minute drive from the Kawaguchiko Interchange. It towers over the street and has the kanji for Mt. Fuji framed upon it. It was first built in 1788 and was repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt. The current gate was constructed in 1957. It was originally called the Karakane-dorii as it was made from bronze imported from ancient China ('Kara' meaning ancient China and 'Kane' meaning bronze) and the current Kana-dorii name is said to be a corruption of the original name. It serves to welcome believers who are coming to climb Mt. Fuji and passing through the gate moves you from the secular world to the world of the Mt. Fuji faith.

Yamanashi prefecture is the proud home of one of Japan’s most celebrated icons: Mount Fuji. Although the mountain straddles both Yamanashi and Shizuoka, the most breathtaking views of Fuji-san can be seen from the Fuji Five Lakes north of the mountain in Yamanashi prefecture. The plethora of outdoor activities in and around the lakes all have the benefit of the country’s highest mountain as their backdrop, and we can assure you that it is an unforgettable sight.
