"This temple, a 15-minute drive from Hokuriku Expressway's Tachikawa Interchange, was built by Gyoki in 725. Part of the Tateyama mountain worship faith, it had become a large, well-known temple with 21 shrines and 60 monks by its peak. The temple declined after being set ablaze by Uesugi forces and losing many of its treasures and records to the fire. However, the temple hall was later rebuilt and served as the as the family temple for many generations of the Maeda Clan. The temple grounds contain a great deal of sights to see. These include Buddhist carvings and statues such as the Oiwa Nissekiji Sekibutsu, a nationally designated historic site, and the Oiwa Nissekiji Magaibutsu, an important cultural property. The temple, which venerates Fudo Myoo as the main object of worship, is beloved by the nickname ""Oiwasan no Ofudosan."" "

Interesting place to visit but didnt manage to explore the area fully . Although they had a area map , it is not as clearly label at site. If they would put up more directional signage on site , it...

This museum is a one-minute walk from Tateyama Station, the last stop on the Toyama Chihou Railway Tateyama Line. It features exhibits on the special geological, topographical, and biological features of Tateyama, as well as the history and natural environment of Tateyama caldera, the site of one of Japan's largest landslides. Its indoor exhibit hall features a number of exhibits from which visitors can learn about erosion control at Tateyama caldera in an easy-to-understand manner, including a diorama that recreates the view inside the caldera, as well as a simulation game. Real-time information on the Alpen Route is also on display.

Would have been a 5 stars place to visit if they had a bit more English there... Really nice museum, but it is a pity that there is very little English in there.

This museum is a 45-minute drive from JR Toyama Station. Located inside Ashikura Temple at the foot of Mt. Tateyama, the museum conducts and exhibits the results of comprehensive academic research into the relationship between the natural environment and people of Tateyama. The museum's massive 13-hectare grounds are divided into three zones; Kyokai (World of Teachings), Seikai (World of Holiness), and Yukai (World of Play). Each zone features a number of different facilities, including the Tenjikan Exhibit Hall and the Yobokan Hall. The museum's exhibits also include a bronze statue of Sakra designated as an important cultural property and a collection of items related the Tateyama faith designated as important tangible folk cultural property.

Tateyama was a major religious centre for over 1,300 years, and before the Tateyama religion began, people revered the mountains. Tateyama, Mt Fuji and Hakusan are the 3 holy mountains. People came...

This shrine is a 10-minute walk from Toyama Chihou Railway Iwakuraji Station and a 15-minute drive from either Tateyama Interchange. or Toyama Interchange. Oyama Shrine is comprised of three different shrines; Minehonsha (the main shrine), Kiganden, and Maedateshadan. This shrine, Maedateshadan, is the closest of the three to the lowland. It gets its name from the fact that it stands in front of Mt. Tateyama. Every autumn, the shrine hosts the Tateyama Fire Festival where anyone can try walking across a bed of burning coals on their bare feet.

This historical temple was built in 1370. Number 6 on the Shinsaigoku 33 Temple Pilgrimage, it maintains the legend of the santoryuto mountain and ocean phantom lights. It is filled with things to see, including a bell tower that has survived two fires, a Sanmon gate said to be built by Hidari Jingoro, a Thousand Armed Thousand Eyed Kannon Bodhisattva statue (The Radiant Kannon Bodhisattva), and a cloister holding 33 stone Kannon statues. We also highly recommend viewing the city-designated Cultural Assets, like the grave of Daitetsu Sorei, and the two sweet olive trees of Ryusen-ji.

  • Tateyama Murodo
    Travel / Tourism
Toyama Nakaniikawa-gun Tateyamamachi Ashikuraji Division Dodaira
A murodo is a hall where mountain ascetics stay and pray. This murodo located along the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route is said to be the oldest mountain hut in Japan. It was actually used as a base for climbing Mt. Tateyama, Mt. Tsurugi, and other mountains in the area as late as the 1980s. An archeological excavation conducted when the building was disassembled for repairs discovered evidence of its role as place of worship from around the 12th, confirming that it has been in use since the Kamakura Period. The current building is a reconstruction built in 1726 and has been designated as a National Important Cultural Asset. It was built using wood from the virgin forests of Bijodaira. How the wood was carried here is still wrapped in mystery.

This is one part of the dispersed museums making up the Tateyama Museum complex. This is the same ground that gave birth to the worship of Tateyama, and this museum recreates in three dimensions the Tateyama Mandala, an image handed down from the Heian period against the unchanging backdrop of the Tateyama range. It is made up of four sections: the earthly plane, the path of the sun, the heavens, and the path of dark, and each one is recreated in shape, sound, light, and aroma.

Toyama Areas

around-area-map

Toyama is one of the three prefectures that house the Japanese Alps, with its southern and eastern borders comprising one long stretch of mountains, out of which the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route is forged. While traditional crafts fill the northern coastal cities of Toyama and Takaoka, thatched roof houses offer unrivalled views against a backdrop of fantastic scenery at Gokayama in the mountainous area in the south of the prefecture.
