    Yamagata Pref. Tsuruokashi Haguromachitamagawa 35
This garden at Gyokusen-ji Temple, also called the Flower Temple, was made in 1450. Centered around a large pond, with a natural waterfall on the stream flowing from the mountains, the park has a variety of flowering plants, azaleas, maples, and Japanese primrose in a Chisen Kaiyushiki Horai water-based promenade garden. Nationally recognized as a Cultural Asset Spot of Scenic Beauty, it is popular all year round for its scenery.

This garden is attached to the Chido Museum, in Kachushinmachi, Tsuruoka City. This hill-and-pond garden was built on the north side of Shonai domain lord Sakai's former retirement residence. This is a nationally registered Place of Scenic Beauty due to its value as one of the few remaining residential gardens of the Tohoku region.

    どんよりとした曇り空の為か、全体的に暗く感じてしまいました。晴れていれば随分と美しい庭園でしょうね。

Located in Kachushinmachi, Tsuruoka City, this garden was built in the mid-Edo period for the manor of Suge Sanehide, a senior vassal of the Shonai domain and descendant of Sugawara no Michizane (a famous political figure and scholar in the mid 9th century). It holds an ancient pine said to be over 300 years old, as well as weeping cherry blossoms and azaleas that are delights to see in their blossoming seasons. Tours are available with reservations.

Yamagata Areas

around-area-map

Although often overlooked, Yamagata prefecture by no means lacks appeal: the Yamadera temple trail through the mountains, deliciously tender Yonezawa wagyu, and over 100 steaming hot springs, most notably Zao Onsen, await visitors. When winter comes, the snowcapped peaks become dotted with skiers by day and onsen-goers by night, while summer brings the celebration of juicy Yamagata cherries.
