Shitomae no Seki
A historical site in NarukoOnsenShitomae, Osaki City. This was the location where a checkpoint had been established during the Sengoku period at a strategic point along the Dewa Kaido Road. In 1670 it was turned into the Shitomae Guardhouse by the local ruling Date family. In famous poet Matsuo Basho's work Oku no Hosomichi he tells of when he and his student Sora were passing through the checkpoint and fell under the suspicions of a government official.
