Enjoying Its Beaches
Enjoying Its Beaches
Being at the tip of Boso Peninsula, Tateyama enjoys sandy beaches both along the water of Tokyo Bay and on the Pacific Coast, and thus a variety of water conditions perfect for leisure swims and snorkeling on one side, and enviable surfing conditions on the other. On the bay side, we suggest you pack light and do some beach hopping; Hojo Beach, which is located a 10-minute walk from the JR Station, is the most popular beach and plays hosts to numerous water-related activities and competitions.
Many visitors and locals spend the day at Hojo, but for snorkeling in more natural surroundings we recommend you keep driving along Roads 250 and 257 and beach hop between Okinoshima Beach, Hasama Beach, and Nishizaki Beach, all on the Tokyo Bay side. Surfers on the other hand, should drive a couple more kilometers further to reach the beautiful Heisaura and Aihama beaches. -

Explore Tateyama’s Historic Locations
Explore Tateyama’s Historic Locations
Although less abundant than other coastal towns in the Kanto region, Tateyama is still home to a few historical spots well-deserving of a tourist’s travel time. To take a break from the water while exploring the spiritual side of the city, we suggest you pay a visit to Awa Shrine. Nestled in a mountain at the eastern end of Heisaura Bay, this magical powerspot is known as the ichinomiya, or main shrine of what used to be known as Awa Province. Its history can be traced back to the ancient Jomon period, and its importance backed up by the title of 1st ranked Imperial Shrine. Beyond the history, it is a great place to connect with the natural surroundings and with Japan’s spiritual side.

Another vestige of the time of Awa Province, or at least the idea of the original, is Tateyama Castle. Located in Shiroyama Park, this replica castle houses the Tateyama City Museum and with it, a variety of artifacts from the Satomi Clan, the rulers of the region around 10 generations ago. Beyond the history, this hilltop spot provides awesome views of Tateyama City and Tokyo Bay, as well as beautiful, memorable sunsets.

Seafood with a View
You cannot leave Tateyama without first trying its food. As any well-respected seaside city, the seafood in town is a must and the place to enjoy it while take in the water views is Nagisa Cafeteria. The seafood donburi is packed with the freshest sashimi you can find, tasting even better than it looks. Finish off with refined fruit tart and an espresso, and relax as the sun slowly fades with Mount Fuji on the horizon.
