Shitennoji Temple
The oldest temple in Tsu City, it is located in Sakae-machi, Tsu City, Mie Prefecture and said to have been built by Prince Shotoku at the imperial request of Empress Suiko. It originally had larger premises, but the majority of it was burned down during WWII. It includes the grave of Kaokujuei Zenni, Oda Nobunaga's biological mother, the statue of Prince Shotoku, an important cultural property, and the statue of Bhaisajyaguru. There are many valuable cultural properties that remain such as the mountain gate that is a tangible cultural property of the city. In addition, the temple also conducts a Zen experience course where you can get an easy taste of the atmosphere of a Zen temple, and sutra copying.

Itineraries about this spot
Review
-
- Good to visit
- We visited Shitennoji, Tennoji-Ku, one of the oldest Buddhist temples in Japan (dating back to 593 AD). The 5 tier Pagoda was particularly good.
-
- Key temple in the heart of Osaka
- It’s just okay, it’s another temple. It was rebuilt from fire. No pictures are allowed which is disappointing because the gold Buddha’s are impressive.
-
- 境内は自然いっぱいです
- 歴史あるお寺らしく寺宝が一杯のようです。山門、梵鐘、他にも絵画などが文化財に指定されています。境内の自然も見所です。
