Kouzouji temple
An ancient Buddhist temple located in Sasayama City, Hyogo Prefecture. This history rich temple was founded by Emperor Kotoku in 646 and given the honorary mountain name Hokyozan by the mountain hermit Hodo. Considered one of the Three Maple Temples of Tamba-Sasayama, in autumn the temple is a renowned destination for fall foliage and attracts many visitors come to enjoy the colors. The leaves reach their peak from early to mid-November and a Kannon Maple Festival is held on the third Saturday and Sunday in the month. The temple is a 10 minute drive from the Tannan Sasayamaguchi interchange on the Maizuru-Wakasa Expressway. Visitors are encouraged to visit all three Maple Temples of Tamba-Sasayama, which consists of the Bunpo-ji Temple, Daikoku-ji Temple, and, of course, the Kouzouji temple.
