Yabakei Gorge
A gorge located in Nakatsu City, Oita Prefecture where curiously shaped rock formations and boulders interweave to create beautiful scenery. The gorge has also been designated one of Japan's new top three most beautiful areas, a National Place of Scenic Beauty, and a Japan Heritage Site. Some of the many things to see and do here include the scenic Hitome Hakkei (eight different views at a glance); Yabakei Dam; and Yabakei Aquapark, a facility where you can enjoy aquatic sports. The gorge entrances visitors with its beauty year round, with fresh verdure in spring and fall foliage in autumn carpeting the lovely scenery. From early November, the gorge's Japanese maples and gingkoes begin to change color, delighting the eye with reds and yellows.
