Makado Onsen
A hot spring whose history is said to date back 1,000 to 1,500 years. According to legend, the spring was found after its waters healed a wounded crane; legend also says that the mighty samurai Minamoto no Yoshitsune along with the warrior monk Benkei and his retinue bathed here. The waters of the calcium sulfate spring (hypotonic alkaline spring) are colorless and tasteless but have a faint hydrogen sulfide smell. These waters are said to treat nerve pain, muscle soreness, joint pain, fatigue, burns, scratches, and chronic dermatitis. The hot spring is operated by the Makado Kanko Hotel and its bathhouse is only open to non-guests from 11:00 to 15:00 on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays. The hotel also has facilities for hosting weddings and banquets; the hotel shop sells renowned Aomori sweets, local liquors, and Aomori-grown apples.
