Iwanyu

This public bathhouse, a 20-minute drive from the Kokonoe Interchange on the Oita Expressway, is one of three located in Sujiyu Onsen, a hot spring district which has existed amidst the mountains of Kokonoe since ancient times. Situated along a river deep in the hot spring district, the bathhouse has a stone outdoor bath into which streams of hot spring water pour into from above. The bathhouse has only one bath, and as such it alternates men- and women-only days with the indoor bath of the Yakushiyu bathhouse near the Yakushido Temple. The Utase Daiyokujo bathhouse is located nearby; a symbol of Sujiyu Onsen, the bathhouse's vaunted cascade bath has 18 hot spring water streams pouring into it from two meters overhead.
