Rakanji Temple
"This ancient Buddhist temple is 15 minutes from the Kasai Interchange on the Chugoku Expressway. It is said to have been a branch temple of the Sagamiji Temple, which records state was founded by the priest Gyoki per a divine revelation from the god Sagami Myojin. More than 400 Buddhist statues stand on the temple's grounds, and accordingly it is also known as the ""Gohyaku-Rakan (500 Arhats) Temple."" The highly expressive statues have faces that are somewhat exotic for such figures in Japan and some say they were modeled after people who came to Japan from continental Asia, but the true background behind the statues, when they were made, and for what purpose remains unclear. Today, the statues have been designated a Cultural Property by Kasai City."
