Kane no Torii

Historical Monument
"This torii gate stands at the top of a steep climb beyond a black gate on the grounds of the Kimpusen-ji Temple; it stands 7.5 meters tall and its pillars are 3.3 meters in circumference. Made entirely of bronze, they were rebuilt during the Muromachi period after being destroyed in a great fire in 1348. Technically, this is the temple's ""Hosshinmon"" or ""Spiritually Awakening Gate."" There are four gates one must pass through to reach the top of the temple's mountain, dedicated to spiritual awakening, ascetic training, lower enlightenment, and greater enlightenment; this gate is the first of the four. It has been designated a National Important Cultural Property."
