JIYU MINKEN Institute of Machida City
The Freedom and People's Rights Movement was a political movement in the Meiji period consisting largely of the former warrior class, wealthy farmers, and people of lower farming classes. The JIYU MINKEN Institute of Machida City collects and displays materials related to this movement and the history of Machida. The ceramic wall relief at the entrance of the permanent exhibition room appears to symbolize the various people who participated in the movement. Renovated in 2016, the permanent exhibition teaches about the movement as it pertains to the Buso Region (the area of modern Kanagawa Prefecture, as well as Tama). There is also a new children's section in the corridor where they learn about the movement from a slightly different angle from what they're taught in school.
