Hirozawa Tokusaburo Kobo
This workshop crafts Iga kumihimo cords, a traditional local craft. Located a one-minute walk from Nishiote Station, the workshop carries on this elegant cord art which is a product of techniques and discipline refined and passed down for generations. The origins of Iga kumihimo date back to when the techniques for making the cords which are believed to have been used in Japan since the Nara period for samurai armor and Shinto and Buddhist ritual articles, were brought to Iga and began being commercially produced. Inside, the workshop displays numerous examples of cords spanning everything from ancient cords to modern day kumihimo cords, and customers can also watch a demonstration of how to tie a decorative cord for holding a kimono sash in place. With an advance reservation, you can also participate in a cord making activity and learn how to make your own kumihimo.
