Takachiho-gawara

Mountain
Located a 25-minute drive from Kirishimajingu Station on the JR Nippo Main Line, this is the location of chief trailhead leading up Mt. Takachiho, a 970-meter-high mountain situated in the southeastern part of the Kirishima Mountains. Also the former location of Kirishima Shrine before it was destroyed due to an eruption of Mihachi, the ruins of the old shrine can be found here as well. In addition, there is a visitor's center and shop, and during the climbing season the area bustles with mountain climbers and hikers. A cluster of Rhododendron kiusianum grows in the area which blossom with pink flowers around late May each year. In autumn, the contrast between Mt. Takachiho and the area's fall foliage is stunning.
