"This public bathhouse is located in Hinatayama Onsen, a hot spring district which has been used by locals practically in place of the baths in their own homes since ancient times, a five-minute walk from Hinatayama Station on the JR Hisatsu Line. Opened in 1825, the bathhouse is supplied by a natural hot spring which is the oldest in the area and which is called the ""Motoyu"" (""original spring"") by locals. The bathhouse was a favorite destination for famous samurai and Meiji restoration leader Saigo Takamori when he stayed at a friend's home in the area, and as such the bathhouse is also nicknamed the ""Saigo-yu"" (""Saigo's bathhouse""). The bathhouse' indoor bathing area has two baths with different temperatures. The baths are supplied with water from a sodium hydrocarbonate spring/chloride spring."

西郷隆盛さんが征韓論にやぶれ下野した際にここでゆっくり過ごしたそうです。場所やお湯は当時と変わらないですが建物はさすがに建て替えたそうです。と言っても昭和初期を彷彿とさせるレトロ感、価格も昭和を彷彿させる250円貸しタオル100円。勿論石鹸シャンプーはありません。湯船も大きめのものが二つと本当に銭湯でした。因みに地元の方は50円だそうです？地元の人がたくさんお見えになったので色々話をし...
