Toyoji Temple
This Buddhist temple is located right next to Ishijirogawa Beach on the east side of Shikinejima Island and is the island's only one. A spectacular 900-year-old yew plum pine designated a Natural Monument by the Tokyo metropolitan government stands on the temple's grounds. Nagi (Asian bayberry) also grows wild on the grounds, and this is the northernmost limit for this plant which is mostly seen in Kyushu, Okinawa, and other warm areas. These plants have also accordingly been designated a Cultural Property and can be seen growing throughout the year. In addition, the temple is an activity base for the Shikinejima Hokke Wasantai, a Buddhist hymn choir.
