Ikeda-machi Western-style Residential Street

Historical Monument
This area can be reached by taking the Ohmi Railway Bus bound for Chomeiji from JR Omihachiman Station; get off at the Hasshomae stop and walk five minutes. The old-fashioned Western-style residential area is encircled by a 100-meter-long red brick wall. Today, the district consists of three extant structures designed by William Merrell Vories , an English architect who was invited to Japan to teach in the Meiji period. All of the buildings are designed in the American colonial style; one of the buildings, the Waterhouse Residence (Waterhouse Memorial) is made specially open to the public in the spring and fall.
