Wakayama Castle Park
This public park is maintained on the inner grounds of Wakayama Castle, counted as one of Japan's Top 100 Castles. The castle's donjon has been rebuilt using reinforced concrete and from its top visitors can get a sweeping view of Wakayama City. The Nishinomaru Teien is a traditional Japanese strolling garden built around a central pond which was created in the early Edo period, and in the Koshoan teahouse in the garden you can sit at a table and enjoy a casual cup of delicious matcha green tea. Interestingly, the castle had a highly unusual design feature in the form of a roofed bridge called the Ohashi Roka which was only for Edo period feudal lords and retainers to use to travel between the outer citadel and western citadel; the bridge still stands in the park today. There's also the Wakayama Castle Park Zoo, where visitors can see some 100 animals.
