Ugajindo Shrine

Other Historic Site/Building
This Iimoriyama shrine overlooks the castle town of Aizuwakamatsu. In the shrine hall adjacent to Aizu Sazaedo, there are statues of 19 Byakkotai samurai who committed suicide on Mt. Iimori. The small shrine was built during the Kanbun period (1661-1672) by Masakata Matsudaira, the third generation of the Aizu Matsudaira family, as a secondary shrine to Itsukushima Shrine. The statues of the 19 Byakkotai samurai dressed in western clothing were made in 1890, and still attract many visitors to the shrine.
