Ashiura Kanonji Temple

Temple
A Buddhist temple located in Ashiura-cho, Kusatsu City. Records state the temple was founded by Prince Shotoku. The temple’s principal object of worship is 11-headed Kanzeon Bodhisattva. After its revival by the priest Kanga in 1408, the temple also began gaining political power—for example, the temple’s ninth head priest, Senshun, was granted control over transportation on Lake Biwa by the mighty samurai lord Toyotomi Hideyoshi. Today, the temple is only open to the general public for worship twice a year in spring and fall—at all other times, worshipping at the temple requires an advance reservation.

    宗派は天台宗のお寺です。本尊は十一面観世音菩薩です。お寺の近くには草津市教育委員会の立てた説明書きがあり、お寺の由来などが見れました。
